‘Fast Color’: The Gugu Mbatha-Raw Superhero Drama Deserved a Better Release

On one level, the failure of “Fast Color” is a simple story: After its world premiere at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival, Julia Hart’s sci-fi drama received strong reviews but struggled to find distribution. In September 2018, Codeblack Films, the African American-focused arm of Lionsgate Entertainment, acquired the title — but in January, Lionsgate ended its Codeblack partnership. That meant cutting the film’s marketing budget, and  “Fast Color” made just $76,916 in its April 19 limited release on 25 screens.

There’s also a deeper and more complex tale about why this film’s earnings potential went virtually untapped. As the movie quietly hit various digital platforms and DVD last week, this missed opportunity is worth a closer look.

The movie stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a woman named Ruth, who’s forced to go on the run when her superpowers are discovered. Years after she abandons her family, the only place she returns home. A unique, introspective take on the superhero movie, “Fast Color” centers on an empowering narrative in which three generations of strong black women come to terms with their special abilities. Hart’s film provides a welcome contrast to a genre dominated by white men; the movie delivers a maternal vision of heroism that’s out of this world. In superhero movie lingo, it’s an original story, but more focused on family bonds than any world-shattering event.

There aren’t many sci-fi movies with black leads, much less black women, and “Fast Color” stars three black actresses: Mbatha-Raw, Lorraine Toussaint, and Saniyya Sidney. Prior to the film, Marvel’s “Blade” and “Black Panther” – both male characters – were the only popular black superheroes to star in their own movies. There were aberrations like Robert Townsend’s “Meteor Man” and Will Smith’s “Hancock,” but neither belonged to any popular superhero tradition. And Halle Berry’s 2004 turn as Catwoman was negligible, given that the character wasn’t originally written as a black woman, and the film was a critical and commercial flop.

As the rare motion picture to center black women superheroes, “Fast Color” is immediately distinct. So why did the film fail to draw major distributor interest before Codeblack came to its rescue? It’s a familiar and dispiriting story that falls in line with “black films don’t sell” — the long-standing trope that resists repeated debunking. In fact, the current environment likely couldn’t be better suited and more accommodating for a film like “Fast Color” to find an audience.

It would stand to reason that Lionsgate’s interest in “Fast Color” stemmed in part from the increasing interest in diversity and inclusion. Written and directed by a woman, starring women of color, and exploiting the superhero ethos, it received praise for its visual style, performances, direction, and thought-provoking story. It’s a sci-fi film with more on its mind than spectacle, exploring universal themes that should leave audiences pondering after the end credits roll.

And then there’s the box-office performance of films like Jordan Peele’s “Us.” In February, it became the largest domestic movie opening for a film with a black woman lead (Lupita Nyong’o) — a custom-made marketing hook. There was also 2017’s “Girls Trip,” which was a surprise box-office smash with a $31 million premiere, en route to a worldwide gross of over $140 million — the highest-grossing movie to be written by a black woman (Tracy Oliver).

Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time” saw tepid reviews, but brought in $33 million for its 2018 opening. Performing well relative to their budgets were Taraji P. Henson’s $20 million “What Men Want” ($72 million worldwide) and Issa Rae in “Little” ($48.7 million worldwide). However, “Fast Color” opened with an uninspired marketing effort, and saw its widest release at just 25 theaters throughout its short theatrical run.

Instead, Lionsgate focused its efforts on the $50 million “Hellboy,” which opened the week before. It flopped, opening on over 3,000 screens with a final worldwide gross of just over $21 million.

Even the Kenyan lesbian romantic drama “Rafiki,” released by indie outfit Film Movement, outgrossed Hart’s “Fast Color” in US box office receipts, with an over $130,000 gross. “Fast Color” surely could have done better than its $77,000 gross indicates.

A 2018 study from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania concluded that films with black leads can be highly profitable — when they’re marketed to not just black audiences, but all audiences. Additionally, the 2019 Hollywood Diversity Report from UCLA showed that increasingly diverse audiences seek diverse movie content, concluding that “diversity is essential for Hollywood’s bottom line.” According to the Motion Picture Association of America, African Americans began to show up in force at the box office in 2016 as major movies displayed greater diversity in their casting and subject matter: That year, the number of frequent African-American moviegoers nearly doubled to 5.6 million. The MPAA defines frequent moviegoers as people who attend the cinema once a month or more.

All the available data that points to an environment in which “Fast Color” should thrive if put in a position to do so. Meanwhile, uninspired retreads like the third “Hellboy,” the fifth “Shaft,” and the fourth title in the “Men in Black” franchise flop in embarrassing fashion.

When about the “Fast Color” release in an interview with IndieWire this month, the actress said the outcome was out of her hands. “There are all these factors that, as an actor you’re not necessarily in control of,” she said. “You just do your job as an actor and months or years down the line, the film comes out.” However, she expressed optimism about the next phase of the movie’s life. “I think it’s exciting that it’s now coming out on DVD, and will possibly have this whole other life of its own,” she said. “I believe there is interest in the film, which couldn’t have been released at a better time with the dialogue on women’s’ empowerment that has progressed since we shot it. And with the interesting conversation that has been raised around its release, I think that made people even hungrier to see it.”

At least, that’s the hope. Even home video releases need marketing, especially for films that receive minimal exposure in theaters, or none at all. But it’s certainly possible that “Fast Color” will eventually find a larger audience on the home video market, as long as viewers are willing to pay the associated costs. Should it eventually land on subscription-based OTT services like Netflix, that would potentially open it up to even more viewers.

In hindsight, a Netflix release from the start would’ve likely led to better outcomes for the film. Given that the streaming giant boasts over 130 million subscribers worldwide, it’s arguable that more people would’ve seen “Fast Color” if it had been available to them at home in the first place, where a box office gross wouldn’t have determined its success.

Marvel has yet to produce the female equivalent of “Black Panther.” With a sequel to that film currently in development, some fans are hoping it will find room for X-Men’s Storm. In the Marvel comics, the characters eventually become lovers, and it would seem like a logical move for the studio as it seeks to diversify its slate of movies to include more characters of color and female. “Fast Color” may have provided a test case for audience appetite for a movie about a black woman superhero. Instead, we’ll have to wait until the next opportunity. Here’s hoping.

Seth Meyers to President Trump: 'Hey, A–hole,' Your Latest Sexual Assault Denial Is a Confession — WATCH

Seth Meyers had no time for a “Closer Look” on Tuesday. Instead, the Late Night host tersely addressed the latest sexual assault allegations leveled against President Trump.

Meyers aimed his commentary directly at 45 in a segment called “Hey!” The desk piece was born from this week’s New York Magazine cover story, in which advice columnist E. Jean Carroll accuses Trump of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room 23 years ago. In the days since the interview was first published, Trump has vehemently denied the assault, telling The Hill that Carroll is “not my type” and “it never happened.”

“Hey, asshole, if someone asks you if you raped that woman, and you say, ‘No, she’s not my type,’ that’s not a defense. That’s a confession,” Meyers said. “It’s like if you asked Hannibal Lecter, ‘Did you eat that guy?’ and he said, ‘No, he looked a little bony.’”

“No one believes you when you deny this stuff, because you already admitted to it,” Meyers continued. “Remember, you were on a bus with Billy Bush, bragging about assaulting women like some sort of Port Authority pervert. Trump’s headshot shouldn’t be hanging at the White House; it should be hanging at every Greyhound bus station in the tri-state area.”

Later, Meyers pointed out that Carroll is at least the 22nd woman to come forward with allegations against POTUS. The sheer number, he said, makes it hard to believe that Carroll is being dishonest. “Who do you think is lying to us in this situation?” he asked. “All 22 women who have nothing to gain by lying, and are showing incredible courage in the face of these kinds of attacks, or the known liar who called climate change a Chinese hoax, said three million people voted illegally in the last election, and once told Eric Trump, ‘I enjoy spending time with you’?”

Nene Leakes Is Not Leaving RHOA

NeNe Leakes isn’t going anywhere.

Despite reports that she was suspended from The Real Housewives of Atlanta, NeNe says she will be back in season 12.

“I have never been suspended,” she told Vic Jagger on the Majic Radio Show this week. “And I am on season 12. Thank you very much.”

She also does not have a spinoff in the works, as far as she knows.

“If I’ve gotten a spinoff, they haven’t told me yet, and I need them to call me…If I had a spinoff, I’d be happily telling you.”

When E! News talked to Andy Cohen, executive producer extraordinaire, at the Watch What Happens Live 10 year anniversary celebration, he was quick to name NeNe as the housewife he hopes never leaves the franchise, and he named her as his favorite WWHL guest.

“Our guest who’s been on more than anybody else in 10 years is NeNe Leakes, and she’s been here 36 times, which for me is akin to having 36 nights off, because it’s always a night off when she’s here,” he said.

When we asked which housewife spills the most tea, it was NeNe once again.

“It’s why she’s always here.”

So why all the rumors of NeNe’s departure?

In an episode of RHOA that aired in March, NeNe was shown ripping a cameraman’s shirt when he went into her closet, following Kandi Burruss and Porsha Williams, after she told everyone not to go into her closet.

“Hell no,” NeNe had yelled to Kandi after she asked to see the closet. “My closet is not together.”

She defended her actions on WWHL right after the episode aired.

“How are you going to overreact in your own home? If I tell you to visit me and sit right here, you need to sit right here. You don’t have the right to go through my house to open my doors, my closets, my pantries, none of that.”

At the season 11 reunion, Porsha revealed that the altercation was more than just a ripped shirt, and said that NeNe pushed her and ripped her belt off, and accused NeNe of “choking up the producer.”

That incident, combined with NeNe’s open disdain for many of her castmates, which she was candid about in an interview with E! News back in April, provided plenty of fuel to rumors that Leakes might not return to the show, along with the fact that NeNe didn’t start filming for season 12 until a little later than the rest of the cast.

A rep for Leakes told E! News that the reason for the delayed start had to do with active contract negotiations, and there was “absolutely no truth” to the rumors of a suspension.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta airs on Bravo.

E! and Bravo are both part of the NBC Universal family.

Love Island stars blasted for disrespectfully ‘acting like Yewande had died’

Love Island fans have blasted the Islanders for their bizarre reaction to Yewande Biala's exit.

The scientist has gone home to Dublin after failing to couple up with any of the lads.

Viewers were in disbelief at Anna Vakili and Amber Gill's 'overreaction' to Yewande leaving the villa.

They claimed the Islanders were 'acting like Yewande has died' – despite the fact she had only left a reality TV show.

Michael Griffiths raised a toast to their absent friend, while Amber Gill claimed Arabella Chi had "jumped in her grave".

Love Island fans took to Twitter to question why the girls were overreacting.

One viewer asked: "Why are they acting like yewande has died???"

"For god sake Amber, the girl hasn’t died she’s just left the reality tv show that you’re all on, get a grip," added another.

A third said: "Why are Amber and Anna acting like someone’s just died. It’s f***ing ridiculous. Do they not realise it’s a game?"

"Nahhhhh all of these girls are fully trash lol it’s not that deep. Your gonna see her in a few weeks. Nobody has died looool done out ere," said a fourth.

Danny Williams was in the firing line for choosing to couple up with Arabella instead of Yewande.

As they walked back into the garden, Amber said: "Look at everyone bouncing back bouncing back as if no one is gone."

She added: "I don’t even care at this point. I don’t want to make eye contact. I don't want to be asked if I’m alright. You can see I’m not alright."

Curtis Pritchard then gave everyone a motivational talk so they could get over Yewande's exit.

Amber said: "I feel like Yewande deserved better. Anything coming out of Danny’s mouth doesn’t add up."

A dramatic argument then took place on the day beds after Arabella and Danny had a very public kiss.

There was some common sense in the villa as Maura Higgins saw the reality of the situation.

In the Beach Hut, she said: "What are you going to do? Mope around? You have to get over it. All of that petty s*** is very immature. It bugs me a bit."

Counting On's Joseph Duggar and Wife Kendra Reveal Sex of Baby No. 2: 'We Are So Thrilled!'

Joseph Duggar and his wife Kendra are giving their son Garrett David a baby sister!

The Counting On stars revealed Tuesday that they’re expecting a baby girl in November.

“We are so excited to announce the gender of baby number #2 ….It’s a GIRL🎉💝We are so thrilled to welcome our sweet baby girl this November!” the couple wrote on Instagram.

Their announcement included a photo of Kendra, 20, happily holding a pink onesie with the number two on it while Joseph, 24, cradled their 1-year-old son Garrett, who wore a blue shirt with a number one on it.

On the Duggar Family website, the family said it was Garrett who first revealed the sex of the upcoming arrival thanks to a “smash cake” at his first birthday party that contained pink frosting in the middle.

“Parenting has already proven to be more wonderful than we could have dreamed,” Kendra said in a statement on the site. “Even though we come from large families, there is nothing like having your own children. We are so thrilled that a little girl will be joining our family! Garrett is going to be such a great big brother.”

She added that she also sought advice from Joseph’s sister (and mom of three) Jessa Seewald, 26, on how to adjust to life as a mom to more than one baby.

News that they are having a daughter came the same day Joseph’s brother Josiah revealed that he and wife Lauren are also expecting a baby girl.

Joe and Kendra, who tied the knot in September 2017, announced in April they were expecting their second child together.

“When I found out that we were expecting, at first I was really shocked and then I was super excited and then I just couldn’t believe it was really happening,” Kendra said in a video. “It was so many emotions. We are so thrilled.”

The pair celebrated Garrett’s first birthday earlier this month with a sweet Instagram message noting his future as a big brother.

“You have brought so much joy just seeing you explore all of the firsts in life! You love to explore with your little fingers, little hands and little feet,” the post read. “We love you so much 💙We know you will be such a good big brother to our new addition this November!”

Who is hosting Big Brother this season? BB21 cast already playing game

The hosting job for Big Brother has belonged to Julie Chen since the first season of the show. It even remained that way when she signed off an episode of Big Brother 20 as Julie Chen-Moonves.

There had been some drama and rumors about whether or not Julie Chen would return for the summer 2019 season, but CBS made sure to let fans know what is going to take place.

Chen also revealed a new house tour, showcasing what the BB21 cast has to work with for the summer 2019 season. There are a lot of changes to the layout of the house, including a treehouse on the second floor.

Cast of Big Brother 21 keeps host

There are 16 new houseguests playing Season 21 and its nice that the production team kept some familiarity with the host. Bringing back Julie Chen for at least one more season is a great move and it should help continue the success that the reality competition has had in the ratings.

'The View:' What Rosie O'Donnell Recently Said About Meghan and Whoopi

Rosie O’Donnell recently appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen and spoke about several topics, including the some of the current co-hosts of The View. O’Donnell served on the panel from 2006 to 2007, and again from 2014 to 2015, according to Entertainment Tonight.

O’Donnell worked with Meghan McCain’s father

Meghan McCain has been vocal presence since joining the show in 2017, leaving her open to criticism at times being one of the few conservatives on the panel (co-host Abby Huntsman, who is on maternity leave, is also a conservative, according to Newsweek). O’Donnell told Cohen that she has empathy for McCain, who is still in mourning over the loss of her father, the late Senator John McCain.

“I don’t watch it (the show) and I knew her when she wasvery young,” O’Donnell told Cohen of McCain. “I had the pleasure ofworking with her father for a lot of the WoundedWarrior Project. And so, got to know him through there and, you know, Ithink she’s in a difficult position. [She’s] trying to do that while grieving. Shewas very, very tight with her father, and he had been dying for a while. Wewatched her daily try to grieve and get through. It’s not really that easy. SoI do have some compassion for her.”

O’Donnell also voiced her opinion on McCain’s treatment of another co-host. “I wish she wouldn’t be mean to Joy Behar, who is, you know, like, a living legend, and should be respected for no other reason than she’s the elder statesman in the room,” O’Donnell said.

Where things stand with Whoopi

The recent release of the book LadiesWho Punch by Ramin Setoodeh, which gave behind-the-scenes details ofthe relationships on the show, described a contentious relationship between O’Donnelland main panelist Whoopi Goldberg. O’Donnell said it was “the worst experience I’ve ever had on television,”and that Goldberg was “as mean as anyone has ever been on television to me,”according to EntertainmentTonight.

O’Donnell told Cohen that now the two are civil. “Well believe it or not, we bumped into each other physically at the Megan Mullally show of her concert in Cafe Carlyle and we were very cordial and said hello,” she said of her speaking with Goldberg. “I worked on a project with her for ABC since this whole McGillicutty occurred. And, you know, I’m always going to respect her. I’m always gonna look up to her. She’s somebody who was inspirational in my career and, you know, you like to keep those people in a place of reverence if you can. And that’s what I’m hoping to do.”

Thoughts on a former co-host

According to Entertainment Tonight, O’Donnell also spoke to Cohen about the highly-publicized prior comments she made about former co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, saying she had a “little bit of a crush” on Hasselbeck when they worked together and that there were “underlying lesbian tones on both parts.” Hasselbeck vehemently opposed O’Donnell’s comments at the time. “I think what she said was reckless, untrue and, not only insulting, disturbing when it comes to how she felt about somebody in the workplace,” Hasselbeck told Entertainment Tonight.

O’Donnell had responded to Hasselbeck by posting an apology to her on Twitter, saying, “hey eh – my crush on u was not sexual – sorry u got scared – surely u recall b4 it all went wrong – i never objectified u – i did find u fantastic – broadway shows – my pool -we were friends once god love ya kid – i always did #hasselbeck #raminSUX.” When Cohen brought up the topic and asked O’Donnell if Hasselbeck had taken her comments out of context, O’Donnell firmly said “Yes!”

Only timewill tell if O’Donnell’s view of The View gets rosier over time.

Love Island’s Tom has second thoughts on Maura already – because ‘she makes him cringe’

In last night’s Love Island, viewers saw the aftermath of Maura Higgins and Tom Walker’s clash after he made some seriously questionable comments about her.

The Irish beauty made Tom do some major grovelling and it seemed to pay off as they coupled up at the end of the episode.

But in tonight’s episode, he’s already having second thoughts about Maura and has some unkind words about her.

After the recoupling, the duo take some time to reflect on the situation and it’s clear Maura is back on Team Tom.

She tells him: “Your speech was so cute. Did you not see I was trying not to smile too much? You did impress, I have to say.”

They share a kiss as Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury watch on, with the blonde bombshell joking: “There’s literally a bedroom right there.”

Maura is excited about where things are going with Tom and heads to the Beach Hut for a debrief.

She says: “Now we’re coupled up we’ll see how things go.

“Things are looking really good at the moment”

Maura Higgins

“I think myself and him are very excited to share a bed together for the first time. Have a little bit of a cuddle and see where things go.

“Things are looking really good at the moment.”

But the next day, Tom speaks to Jordan Hames about the concerns that he’s having.

He tells Jordan: “You never know do you? If another girl comes in that makes a beeline for me and she’s fit and she ticks all my boxes.

“The thing with me and Maura is, between me and you, she doesn’t necessarily tick all my boxes.

“She’s a bit OTT, she’s a bit too loud and attention seeking and sometimes that’s not me. She makes me cringe a little bit.

“On the other side, I enjoy her banter, I enjoy her energy. So I can’t have it all my own way.”

It’s not looking good for Maura.

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
