Beverley Callard has enjoyed a successful career playing Liz McDonald on Coronation Street for over three decades, but behind the scenes the star has had her fair share of struggles.

The 63 year old I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star was at her lowest point back in 2009, when she spent two months in the Priory after becoming overwhelmed with heartbreak over her late mother Mavis' Alzheimer's diagnosis.

The actress was also dealing with the stress of being in £150,000 of debt from her failed pub business with her now-husband Jon McEwan.

Beverley's doctor decided to put her on medication that would "literally put a horse to sleep" to help and, according to the publication, he described her as one of the most ill people he had ever seen.

“Even though after visiting me he’d go to his car and cry his heart out. Even though he’d see me curled into a ball with matted hair, unable to speak or move and no one was sure if I’d get better.

"By being there, by staying right by my side, he proved he loved me no matter what. He proved I had lots to live for, that I could be happy again – even when the future looked black.”
