Jacques family reveals Love Island star has ADHD as they urge fans to be kind

Jacques O’Neill ’s family have revealed that the Love Island star was diagnosed with ADHD as a child.

The announcement comes after the rugby player has received backlash of late over his treatment of Paige Throne – who he’s currently coupled up with in the villa.

Paige stayed loyal to Jacques while she was away, but he strayed from Paige after bombshell Cheyanne caught his eye.

Despite this, Jacques chose to stick with Paige at the recoupling, but the Welsh paramedic was left fuming after discovering his antics with Cheyanne.

Things came to blows between the pair on Friday night’s episode, which saw Gemma Owen’s ex Jacques break down in tears as he appeared to threaten to leave the villa.

In the wake of the emotional episode, Jacques’ family have spoken out on his behalf and revealed his ADHD diagnosis.

“Jacques was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 9 years old,” the post shared to his Instagram began.

“By no means is this a get out clause for his actions but it is to show that he can fundamentally struggle with his emotions at times.

“He is an amazing person who I’m proud to call my friend/little brother.

“All the hate thrown towards Jacques doesn’t go to him directly….It comes to his loved ones who have always supported him and not just whilst he is on Love Island.”

The post continued: “Love Island, although real. Is still a show where the producers do have control and we see 45minutes out of the 1440 in 24hours. Please be kind.”

Alongside the caption was a screenshot of a description of ADHD.

It read: “Sometimes, people living with ADHD may behave in ways that come off as rude or disrespectful. These behaviours can stem from challenges with self-control, executive functioning, and self-stimulating actions.

“How you perceive their behaviour often depends on your understanding of ADHD symptoms. If you start to look at things from their perspective, you may see that it’s not so rude after all.”

People have since flocked to share their support for Jacques and his family, with Love Island 2021 star Jake Cornish leading the comments.

He wrote: “Hope family and friends all ok,” followed by a heart emoji, as model Rob Wilson penned: “Hope family and friends are all ok and are not affected by negativity”.

“Well said .. I actually like him .. people forget it's a reality tv show,” said another, while someone else wrote: “Keep strong! There will always be haters, focus on the love!”

Love Island continues tomorrow night at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub.
