Mark Wright has admitted it is "tough" helping his best friend James Argent to lose weight in preparation for his life saving surgery.

James, 33, revealed in January that he has hit 27 stone and will be undergoing gastric surgery in a final bid to curb his eating disorder.

Former The Only Way Is Essex star James — nicknamed 'Arg' — said at the time that an operation is "the only way" he can lose weight, after being told he is "morbidly obese" by doctors.

Mark is helping his pal, and former co-star, lose weight before the operation as he launches his own fitness app.

But the hunk, who is married to Michelle Keegan, has revealed that the gruelling programme is "hard" for his friend.

He said: "It's not been easy but, you know, it's just what you've got to do for mates and family — you've got to be there for them. Just got to do it as a friend.

"No matter how hard it can get at times, making him lose weight and helping him lose weight is nothing as hard as what it was and everything that he went through last year, you know?

"That was tough, and it's been tough now, but he's getting there. Now he's made a decision on what he's going to do to change it and hopefully it works out for him," Mark continued to tell The Sun.

Another former TOWIE cast member, Dan Osborne, has also reached out to Arg to offer to help him lose weight.

Earlier this week, James posted a photo of himself smiling up at the camera on his Instagram page as he looked to the future in the caption.

He wrote in the caption: "I can't wait to be happy & healthy again, I'm feeling super positive. I'm nervous about the big operation & surgery but I know it's for the best & will be life changing!"

Dan told James in the comments section: "You got this brother as soon as them gyms are open, we are putting the work in mate x."

Taking to Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, James opened up on his eating disorder, telling Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: "I've been struggling with my weight since I was a teenager.

"Since I was young I always remember, you know, half of the year I could be in good shape, training three times a day, but then I'd be starving myself. The other half of the year I'd be doing no exercise at all and I'd be binge eating.

"So since I was a teenager, the last 15 or 16 years, I've always found it almost impossible to have a healthy balance and a happy medium.

"I'm not saying I can't lose the weight without [gastric] surgery, but I've never been able to maintain it before."
