Ricky Gervais, 60, felt compelled to reply after a user branded him “dismissive and arrogant” over his admission about the National Television Awards. The After Life star was caught in a Twitter exchange after he was asked by Piers Morgan to accept his award.
Earlier today, Piers announced he would not be attending the NTAs tonight, where he’s up for the Best Presenter award.
The outspoken former Good Morning Britain star took to social media to ask Ricky to pick it up for him if he wins.
Piers penned: “Voting’s now closed in the @OfficialNTAs – so thanks to everyone who voted for me.
“I won’t be at the show tonight but maybe you could pick up my award for me if I win @rickygervais.
“Can’t think of anyone better suited to celebrating free speech!”
Alongside the tweet, Piers shared a snap of them together from an old interview.
In response, Ricky admitted: “I’ll struggle to muster the energy to get up if I win one myself.”
The comedian’s Netflix show After Life is up for a gong in the comedy category tonight.
However, one follower got the wrong idea about Ricky’s tweet and called him out.
In a response on social media, they urged the comedian to “get off their high horse”.
They wrote: “Little arrogant and dismissive dont you think?(sic)
“People are voting for you, cop on and get off your high horse.
“I am a fan but this is very disrespectful.
“Also @piersmorgan go f*** yourself,” the user added.
Ricky and Piers were both quick to respond to the critique as the former corrected their misinterpretation.
“I simply meant I’m fat and old and tired Andre,” the stand-up replied to the follower.
“It was a bit of a joke. Thanks for being a fan. You obviously love comedy.”
Piers then waded into the exchange with some laughing face emojis as well.
The National Television Awards will take place tonight and are hosted by Joel Dommett.
The ceremony will be broadcast live on ITV from 7.30pm.
