According to People, the 50-year-old rapper and actor was rushed to White Plains Hospital in New York on April 2 after an overdose resulted in a heart attack leaving the artist in a coma and on life support after 30 minutes without oxygen.
With an inimitable talent, DMX leaves a legacy, that includes being dubbed “the king of hardcore rap” (via All Music), 3 Grammy nominations, (via Grammy) and a bevy of classic hits like “Ruff Ryders Anthem” and “Party Up (Up in Here).” A commercial success with unforgettable substance and credibility, DMX is remembered for never sacrificing his artistry in his rise to fame.
A family representative issued a statement to People sharing, “We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50 years old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days.”
Earlier when the prognosis was unclear, sources told TMZ that DMX was in a “vegetative state,” sparking concern from fans and colleagues. With SZA tweeting “I love DMX SO MUCH. Praying hard for the king” and Chance the Rapper sharing, “praying for his full recovery,” many still thought the rapper could pull through (via Yahoo).

By Saturday, the New York native was put on life support with TMZ stating that a lack of oxygen had affected DMX’s brain. As family made their way to the hospital, fans grew more cautious of his recovery. One Twitter user wrote, “Prayers for DMX….. The journey toward sobriety is a tough one… I hope he pulls through,” while countless others joined in with thoughts and prayers. By Monday, the rapper was still on life support. His family released a statement that read: “We ask that you please keep Earl/DMX and us in your thoughts, wishes, and prayers,” citing that DMX was experiencing “serious health issues” (via Associated Press).
DMX’s family held a prayer vigil for the rapper outside the hospital on Monday, and outlets reported he was in a coma (via CNN). As speculation continued, celebs kept paying tribute to DMX, with LL COOL J tweeting about the rapper’s iconic “4, 3, 2, 1” song, writing, “Today is 4/3/21 – it’s only right that we celebrate the talent and genius of my brother @DMX.”
Through their representative, DMX’s family shared with People, “Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time.” Asking for privacy to mourn, the family added, “We will share information about his memorial service once details are finalized.”
