Yikes, the 2020 VMAs Appear to Have Leaked Even Though It's "Live"

Welp, looks like the 2020 VMAs might have leaked online. Like, hours before airing “live” on MTV. To be clear, it is presently (at the time of writing this article) 7:30 pm ET, and the awards show isn’t scheduled to begin until 8:00 pm ET. Yet, the internet already has its hands on Miley Cyrus’ red carpet look:

Not to mention Lady Gaga’s acceptance speech:

Of course, this is Twitter we’re talking about, aka Land of Misinformation—so it’s possible that fans are photoshopping their faves and these images mean nothing.

y’all are so dense y’all really think gaga would let her vmas outfit leak

Orrrrr the show leaked early. How can that happen if it’s live, you ask? Awkward, but apparently the 2020 MTV VMAs are not, in fact, live.

Page Six just released a report that the show actually filmed the vast majority of its performances and awards hand-offs in advance in order to be ultra safe. On top of that, some performers—specifically Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and Miley Cyrus—didn’t even fly to New York City for the show, instead filming their “live performances” from Los Angeles with NYC backdrops.

According to a source, “Performers in Los Angeles were all shot in-studio on a green screen. Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Doja Cat all shot theirs on a screen to make it look like they were in New York but they never came here.”

In other words: WHAT. IS. HAPPENING.
