Thrifty shopper transforms grey sofa worth £500 she nabbed for just £20 secondhand and makes it look brand new

THERE'S no denying how grubby your sofa can get over time which eventually makes you want to buy a new one entirely.

But rather than dropping hundreds on a plush new seat, one woman nabbed one from Facebook Marketplace for a tiny £20.

There was one problem though – it looked incredibly filthy. But that didn't phase the Australian woman who had a simple trick up her sleeve.

And her gamble paid off as she was able to transform the stained, grubby sofa into a high-end version on a budget – and you'd never even guess it was secondhand.

The woman first spotted it on Facebook and realised it was worth about $800 (£500).

She had a Bissell turbo carpet cleaner already and thought to use it on the dirty sofa which would give the fabric a good deep clean.

The machines are pretty pricey to buy brand new, but you can hire something similar for as little as £20 a day – perfect if you only have a single job to do.

The savvy woman revealed that she used the machine three times to ensure all stains were removed, before sprinkling bicarbonate of soda of the entire surface area.

This helps to eliminate any bad odours, then she vacuumed it off to reveal a transformed sofa.

Pretty chuffed with the results, the woman posted the results on Facebook, singing the praises of the handy carpet-cleaning machine.

Understandably, Facebook users were just as impressed and raved about the new look sofa in the comments.

"Awesome job, gotta love marketplace," one woman commented.

"Oh wow, it looks like new, well done," added another.

Others also raved about the power of the Bissell machine with one woman showing off the incredible results after cleaning car seats in a secondhand car.

She revealed that her daughter bought the car and wanted to give it a good clean so went over the carpets and seats with the Bissell machine.

She admitted she was extremely "satisfied" with the incredible results and all it took was "one quick clean."

Although few remained hesitant with one asking: "You are braver than me, I wouldn’t have taken that for free. Was it gross soaking up all that crud?"
