Why Jennifer Lopez is the CDFA ‘Fashion Icon’ of 2019
The 2019 CFDA Awards — a k a fashion’s equivalent to the Oscars — kicks off Monday night at the Brooklyn Museum. The Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards is a celebration of all things fashion that, like any big budget award show, honors the designers who have made a significant impact throughout the past year.
In addition to honoring the sartorial scions, the CFDA Awards also celebrates the pop culture icons that have made a significant fashion footprint over the past year.
Native New Yorker Jennifer Lopez is walking away with 2019’s top prize — the Fashion Icon Award. Past recipients of the award include Rihanna (who accepted the award wearing the now infamous sheer Swarovski crystal dress), Beyonce, and Chanel muse Pharrell Williams.
The 49-year-old singer and actress has been killing it on the fashion front this year with a string of red carpet wins. Who can forget the glamorously glitzy over-the-top high-slit Atelier Versace sparkly showstopper she wore to this year’s Met Gala or the punchy pink Giambattista Valli tulle number she wore to the New York City “Second Act” premiere?
So it should come as no surprise that the Bronx-born beauty is receiving the night’s most coveted prize.
