Spiders have a reputation for being disliked, but they normally pose zero threat to humans in the UK. Rather than killing spiders, there are several much kinder methods which can help people remove spiders from their home without harming them. There are also some methods of deterring spiders from entering the home too, negating the need to get rid of them altogether.

How to deter spiders from the home

To stop spiders making their home in the house, it is a good idea to vaccuum and dust areas where spiders may settle.

Pay special attention to cracks and crevices where a spider may choose to inhabit.

Better yet, cover up cracks and gaps which spiders could use as entry points, such as by windows or doors.

Also, it is a good idea to remove any excess cobwebs as well, as spiders may settle around these too.

There are a variety of spider repellant products on the market which can be sprayed around the home to deter the eight-legged creatures.

But rather than using harsh chemical spider deterrents, there are some more natural methods to consider.

Many recommend peppermint oil as a natural deterrent to spiders when used around the home.

Healthline suggest that to make your own peppermint spider-repellant spray, add some five drops of peppermint oil to a 16-ounce spray bottle.

Fill the bottle with water and add a shot of dish soap and the spray is ready.

Spray some solution around doors, windows or dark corners and hopefully spiders will be so unimpressed with the smell they will run a mile.

Some might opt to use a peppermint diffuser or candle instead of a spray.

How to get rid of spiders

If a spider makes its way into a house, many will resort to the glass and paper method to remove them.

Simply put a cup or glass over the spider and slide some card or paper under the glass very gently so as not to harm the spider.

Once you have the spider in the glass or cup, simply release them outside carefully.

If a spider is in the home, there are also some simple gadgets on the market which can help to catch spiders.

When using one of these items, make sure to gently pick up the spider and take it outside without hurting it.

While the above methods may work for one or two spiders, an infestation of spiders will need to be dealt with by a professional.

So if a lot of spiders are making their home in the house, contact a pest specialist for advice.
