Michael Jordans 1984 Air Ship Shoes Set To Auction At Sothebys
For the right price, you could be the lucky owner of a pair of kicks that were a paramount part of sneaker and basketball history. Shoes once worn by NBA legend and Space Jam star Michael Jordan during his rookie days are being auctioned off later this month. These iconic shoes are expected to sell for upwards of one million dollars!
The sale is also projected to break the record for the most expensive shoes to be sold at an auction.

That’s right! The prolific auction house Sotheby’s is selling Michael Jordan’s signature 1984 Air Ships on October 24th. As part of its Icons of Excellence & Haute Luxury auction, Sotheby’s is putting the first of Jordan’s Nike shoes to hit the professional court on the market.
Any sports fan worth their salt knows that Nike granted the star athlete a sponsorship deal back in 1984. November of that same year, while the model for the Air Jordan 1 was still in the midst of production, the Air Ships were given to Jordan and worn in his fifth game as a rookie player against the Denver Nuggets.
The pair of Air Ships that are set to be auctioned off was once owned by Denver Nuggets player Tommie Tim III Lewis. They were gifted to him by Jordan himself after the match game was over.
The back of the shoe has the word ‘Air’ printed – unlike other Air Ships, which read ‘Nike Air’ or ‘Air Jordan’. The shoe’s iconic design is attributed to Nike’s expert Bruce Kilgore.
“Presented here is the earliest known Michael Jordan Regular Season Game Worn Nike,” the item description on Sotheby’s website reads, “These White & Red Air Ships are a remarkable artifact in the history of sports and basketball, and have been kept in excellent condition.”
Last year, the auction house sold a pair of the ball star’s 1985 sample Air Jordan’s for $560,000. Though, these Air Ships are predicted to blow that price out of the water. It’s expected for these shows to be sold anywhere from $1 million to $1.5 million. This would mark them as the most expensive sneaker purchase at an auction in history.
Back in August 2020, Christie’s auctioning off a 1985 Air Jordan’s pair sold for $615,000 – giving it the record for the highest price auction shoe. But seeing as how these Air Ships are expected to go for almost double that amount, Sotheby’s fingers are crossed they smash the record by the end of the month.
