More than 200 take part in naked art exhibition wearing nothing but face masks
Hundreds of people posed naked at London’s Alexandra Palace wearing nothing but white face masks.
Created by artist Spencer Tunick, It was the first major participatory work of art since lockdown.
220 members of the public gathered for the socially distanced installation titled Everyone Together.
The participants were from various backgrounds including doctors, care home workers, teachers, and government workers, of all ages and genders.
The artist, who is known for his images of groups of naked people taken all over the world, said that creating the work was ‘liberating and life-affirming’.
He said: ‘The reality of masses of people close together – shoulder to shoulder, skin touching skin – may be something of the past for now, but still the desire is there for that natural connectivity, perhaps more so now than ever.’
A doctor from London, 30, who posed for the artwork and worked in an intensive care unit in London during the height of the pandemic was also featured in the exhibition.
He said: ‘I think it’s incredibly important to reach people in different ways about mask-wearing and other precautions than the didactic way that can sometimes happen, so I think this is a great project.
‘The numbers were a lot smaller than [in past installations], so you did get to see who was around, and generally, people got to know each other, reflecting how neighbourhoods and communities got together.’
The installation, which was to mark the Sky Arts channel becoming free from today, was organised in compliance with Covid-19 secure guidelines.
As well as wearing face masks and observing social distancing throughout the day, the participants were subject to strict safety controls.
Volunteers had to complete a pre-screening questionnaire, temperature checks on arrival, and were arranged into position in a one-way queue via megaphone.
All participants were at least one metre apart throughout (even though picture angles may make them appear closer).
