My boyfriend proposed to me just three months into our relationship
DEAR DEIDRE: THREE months into our relationship, my boyfriend proposed to me.
I am 22 and he is 24. We met online and spent weeks chatting before meeting.
He came over to my flat a couple of weeks ago. He cooked me a delicious dinner. He’s a trainee chef.
He made a huge effort and just as we were finishing dessert he pulled a box out of his pocket. When he went down on one knee, I thought he was messing about but then he produced a ring and asked me to marry him.
I accepted his proposal because I do really like him but I have a nagging doubt – is it too soon to become engaged? We love each other and have so much fun.
DEIDRE SAYS: This proposal does sound hurried. A few months is not long to get to know a person sufficiently well to be sure you want a shared future.
Why the rush? Is he worried another man may come along and draw you away from him?
If so, putting a ring on your finger doesn’t make you any more his. Sharing a long-term loving relationship and lots of experiences and knowing one another really well does that.
My support pack Learning About Relationships will help you think this through.
