My two best mates are secretly gay, how can I convince them to come out to their friends and family? – The Sun
DEAR DEIDRE: TWO of my friends are gay and I don’t know how best to help them.
I am a 14-year-old boy and so are my friends.
I’m not gay but they say they have known for ages that they are but are worried about telling anyone because their families would not understand.
They are worried too about how the staff and other students at school would react.
I have always listened to them talk about it and tried to support them.
Sometimes I wonder whether I should tell them to get it out in the open. I think they would feel better about it within themselves.
DEIDRE SAYS: It is up to them who they tell and when, but it is too big a strain for you to carry on being their only source of understanding.
You can help them best by pointing them towards expert support.
FFLAG – Families And Friends Of Lesbians And Gays – can help.
They can download a guide to telling parents at fflag.org.uk or call 0845 652 0311.
