Reality show ‘Meat the Family’ makes contestants eat their pets
A sadistic new reality show poses a predicament that would make any animal lover wince.
Britain’s “Meat the Family” is asking carnivorous families to adopt and raise animals that might soon go to slaughter — unless they pledge to stop eating meat for good, reports the Guardian. If they don’t, they’ll be forced to eat their own pet.
The “transgressive” Channel 4 program is challenging four families to “treat this animal like a member of the family for three weeks,” said Virginia Mouseler, founder and television analyst at the Wit, who presented at the annual global entertainment convention MIPCOM in Cannes, France.
“The question they are asking is: How can you cuddle your dog while you are putting another animal in the oven?” Mouseler said.
The first episodes of “Meat the Family” involve a lamb, pig, chicken and a calf. “In the end, they have to decide whether they put [the animal] in the oven” or send it to a sanctuary to live among other rescued livestock, said Mouseler.
As experts urge consumers to eat less meat in the face of climate change, Channel 4 said the three hour-long episodes will show “the reality of an animal’s journey from field to plate” and highlight “animal behavior and intelligence, the farming practices required to meet the demands of hungry consumers … and the environmental impact” of producing meat.
“It is not sex or drugs anymore. Meat is becoming the next taboo,” Mouseler added.
Producer Daniela Neumann, of Spun Gold, said her studio’s show is tackling “some really timely themes of ethical eating.”
“Why do we find it acceptable to eat a lamb but we wouldn’t eat our pet dog? Could you go back to meat once you’ve put a name and face to a meal?” asked Neumann, who promised the show will have its share of “heart-warming moments.”
