We all know the importance of wearing a face mask while on trains and in shops, but that doesn’t make the experience any more pleasant.
Putting a mask on can feel uncomfortable and, for some, even slightly claustrophobic. But what if we told you that there might be a way to make wearing one a little bit more of an enjoyable experience?
The experts at Yogandha – a wellness brand specialising in aromatherapy oils – have figured that a few drops of essential oil around the edges of your face mask can actually improve the user experience significantly.
How, you ask? A university hospital in San Antonio, Texas, studied the use of aromatherapy oils on face masks, and found that not only did hospital staff report it smelt better but it “supported the respiratory system and helped create a sense of calm when wearing”.

There have also been plenty of other studies done that show essential oils can be effective as mood boosters or stress relievers. Think of it this way, how relaxed do you feel while getting a massage? Or from lighting an aromatherapy candle?
But the best thing about this clever hack is that it’s so easy to do. Yogandha recommends users wear a reusable face mask “for both environmental and comfort reasons”, and then take an essential oil and dab some of it around the perimeter of the mask. If you apply drops to the centre it might show through as oily stains, and the smell might be a tad overwhelming.
Even better, it’s completely up to you to pick out your choice of essential oil. Do you want one to uplift? To calm your mood? To ease anxiety? There’s a specific type of oil for all your needs.

It's also worth noting that some people with sensitive complexions may find their skin doesn't react well to being in contact with a pure essential oil. If this is the case, you can try diluting the oil with a little bit of water. And if your skin still doesn't like it, either stop or place the drops on an area of the mask that doesn't come into contact with skin.
