With their luxurious lifestyles, it’s easy to assume that the royals holiday at exclusive resorts and private islands.
In reality however, while the royals have been known to enjoy some more lavish retreats, on the whole, their holidays are a lot more down-to-earth than you may expect.
And though you may not be finding Kate Middleton walking around duty-free or see Prince William anxiously waiting at the baggage carousel, with their love for UK staycations to European city breaks, their getaways aren’t always shrouded in luxury.
So, whether it’s a countryside staycation or a relaxing holiday abroad, this is where the royals go when in need of a much needed break.

Given that she has numerous properties across the country, it’s no surprise that Her Majesty enjoys nothing more than a staycation.
Since Queen Victoria acquired Balmoral Castle, it’s been a royal tradition for members of the family to spend holidays there, with the Queen spending her summers on the Scottish estate.
On the ITV documentary Our Queen at 90, Princess Eugenie highlighted the monarch’s love for Scotland.
“I think Granny is the most happy there, I think she really, really loves the Highlands… there's always dogs, and people coming in and out all the time,” she said.
Charles and Camilla’s secret Corfu escapes
In the past Prince Charles and Camilla have been spotted out in Corfu’s Kerasia region during the summer months.
When visiting the Greek island, the couple usually stay at the Rothschild villa, which has been dubbed the ‘Kensington Summer Palace’.
The lavish villa has an outdoor pool and is surrounded by pine trees and waterfalls.
The Cambridges’ summers at Anmer Hall
Though Kate Middleton and Prince William’s primary home is London’s Kensington Palace, the young family have spent school holidays and national lockdowns at Anmer Hall.
Sitting on Her Majesty’s Sandringham Estate, the Norfolk abode has 10 bedrooms, a tennis court and plenty of outdoor space for the Cambridges’ hens.
Besides Anmer, the Isles of Scilly is also a favourite of Kate and William’s.
Kate Middleton’s £27,000 luxury retreat
When looking for sunnier escapes, Kate and William have been known to join the Middletons’ annual holiday to Mustique.
According to The Sun, in 2019 the Cambridges spent two weeks renting a villa that cost them £27,000 a week.
The five bedroom holiday home includes an infinity pool and comes with private staff.
Princess Beatrice and Eugenie’s trendy trips
Known for their trendy choices, the princesses are equally as glamorous when it comes to their holiday choices.
From partying in Ibiza to enjoying city breaks in Europe to staying in Sotogrande where their mother owns a house, Beatrice and Eugenie know how to holiday in style.
Royal approved ski resorts
When winter arrives, or when the royals crave something a bit cooler, hitting the ski slopes of the Swiss Alps is the natural thing to do.
The traditional ski destination for the royals is Klosters, where Princess Diana and Prince Charles regularly took William and Harry.
In March 2004, Kate joined William on a trip to the Swiss ski resort where the two officially became an item. During this trip Kate also met Charles for the first time.
Prince Harry’s infamous Las Vegas outing
His holiday to Las Vegas made headlines after pictures showed him playing strip billiards in 2012.
As details leaked, one attendee of the partytold TMZ that: “There was a pool table and he was playing air guitar with pool sticks. He was screaming out, 'Somebody get me a glove! I’m going to do a Michael Jackson impression!”

For their first holiday as a family, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly flew to Ibiza with baby Archie back in August 2019.
Staying there for five nights, the couple allegedly flew to the Balearic island on a private plane and were joined by their security team.
Zara Tindall is also a fan of the party island.
