Womans hat optical illusion baffles people as it appears both green and brown

A woman has left people seriously confused as she showed off her 'colour-changing' hat online.

Environment designer and Tiktok user Otelia Carmen, who uses the handle @oteliacarmen, shared a video of her new hat on the social media site.

And immediately went viral thanks to a baffling optical illusion that meant the hat appeared to change colour.

Speaking in the video, Otelia said: “So, I bought this green hat at the store today and I brought it home and when I took it out, I was like: ‘Why is this brown?’

“Then realised: metamerism. This is why lighting is so important in interior design.”

Metamerism is when a colour change is seen in a coloured item because of different spectral emissions from different light sources.

Each light source has its own “colour”, so when it’s projected onto a coloured surface, it changes the colour of that surface.

In this instance, Otelia's hat was green in the shop lighting, but the lighting in her house makes it look brown.

Even under own home, the hat changed colours from red-brown in the dining room to green in the bedroom.

Otelia decided to take the hat out into the daylight to see once and for all what colour it actually was.

In this clip, she showed that the hat was, in fact, brown.

The two videos have racked up 6million views as people were left stunned.

“So… it’s green, brown, red”, wrote one baffled viewer, as a second exclaimed: “My mind is blown.”

“Here we go again with the ‘is it gold and white or black and blue’ dress”, another person said – referring to the fabric colour debate that took the internet by storm back in 2017.

Another chimed in: “My brain can’t comprehend what’s happening here.”

Meanwhile another TikTok user gained attention for her illusion video earlier this month.

Tasha Calder used a 'genius' hack to instantly create the illusion of bigger lips.

What's even better is that all you need is a makeup brush and a bit of fake tan.
