Winterburn – poor performances 'too frequent'

Nigel Winterburn, who played 440 times for Arsenal, believes performances like the one seen at Nottingham Forest remain 'too frequent'.

A toothless Gunners team were beaten 1-0 by Championship promotion hopefuls.

Nigel Winterburn was speaking to Paddy Power and said: "It was a bad day.

Although there has been progress at Arsenal, those bad days are still too frequent and the difference between the poor performances and the good ones is way too big.

"It just looked like we were outfought and the level of performance from everyone wasn’t good enough and they didn’t have anyone who could stand up to the challenge and drive the team forward."

    Guimaraes 'something good for Arsenal'

Former Arsenal man Emmanuel Petit has labelled Gunners target Bruno Guimaraes as a 'very talented player'.

He told "Bruno Guimaraes is a very talented player. He is a physical guy with very good technique, vison and mentality.

"But, Arsenal have been targeting players in the midfield position for the last 10 years and so many of them have come to the club only to leave again after two years.

"So, they need to be very, very careful about the profile of the players they look for.

"I believe Guimaraes could be something good for Arsenal, just like his teammate at Lyon, Lucas Paqueta – who is a very good player as well.

"But, I still don't know what both of them can do at the highest level. I know they have the quality to play at that level, but to do it week after week, I'll have to be convinced they can do it."

    Gunners planning January clear out

Arsenal are reportedly set to offload THREE more players in the January transfer window as Mikel Arteta looks to raise funds.

And, according to The Mail, that could be made easier by the sale of Bernd Leno, Pablo Mari and Sead Kolasinac.

Keeper Leno has been ousted from the Gunners starting line-up since the arrival of Aaron Ramsdale in the summer.

Mari has not played a single minute of Premier League football since being schooled by Romelu Lukaku in Arsenal's 2-0 defeat to Chelsea back in August.

And Kolasinac has seen just one minute of Prem action since starting in the Gunners' disastrous 5-0 defeat to Manchester City five months ago.

    Klopp comments on Arsenal postponement

Arsenal's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool was postponed last week due to suspected Covid-19 cases in the Reds' camp.

However, it's now come to light that a number of the results were actually 'false positives'.

When asked to comment on the matter, Jurgen Klopp said: "What do you think I mean when I say 'false positives'?

"It's a positive test result and when you are able to do a re-test, one day later, you get a false positive test, as the result was negative.

"So then, third test but you cannot use the players. They are the rules."

    Roma reignite Xhaka transfer interest

Granit Xhaka is Roma's No1 summer transfer target, according to reports.

A £15million transfer collapsed in the summer so he ended up staying at the Emirates.

However, Roma boss Jose Mourinho remains a huge fan of the 98-cap Swiss international, even telling him to 'get the jab and be safe' hours before testing positive for coronavirus in September.

Xhaka is thought to be the 'first name' on his wish list.

And according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Mourinho and Roma will go back in for him at the end of the season.

That is despite the fact Xhaka signed a new Gunners contract in August until 2024.

    Guimaraes not ruling out move

Arsenal target Bruno Guimaraes has insisted he is focussed on propelling Lyon up the Ligue 1 table.

But the Brazil international also admitted he is yet to discuss a new contract with his current employers.

He told Globo Esporte in Brazil: “It’s normal to be mentioned like this when you are an Olympic champion, have been called up for the national team and are performing well individually.

“But I don’t really like to think about it. I let my agent manage that.

“There has been a change in management. We talked about it briefly when (ex-sporting director) Juninho was at the club.

“When the time comes, we’ll talk about it again. The focus now is to move up the rankings and put Lyon in the correct position.”

Petit – top four distinctly possible

Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit believes Arsenal could even finish as high as third season after a difficult start to the campaign.

He told "Can Arsenal make the top four? If you asked me this question two months ago, I would have said it would be a miracle.

"But, after what Arsenal have done in the last few months, they now have an opportunity. They had a terrible start to the season, but now – after six months of playing – they have the chance to qualify for the Champions League.

"Now everyone is changing their minds. Confidence is back, so is the quality and I just hope they don't get any more injured players because that has been a big problem.

"With what is happening to Chelsea at the moment, you can imagine them dropping even more important points and it has you thinking that maybe third place could be a target for Arsenal as well.

"Honestly, the opportunity they have now is a gift for these Arsenal players, so they have to take it!"

NLD – Potential fourth spot decider

Arsenal travel to bitter rivals Tottenham on Sunday, in what could be a huge game in the race for Champions League qualification.

That's according to former Gunner Nigel Winterburn, who while speaking to Paddy Power said: "Arsenal’s focus will solely be on the derby against Tottenham and there will be a lot of gloating going on from whichever team wins.

"I’m hoping it’s going to be my side of North London, but I know for certain that a win will help the squad.

"For a couple of days, you can bask in the glory of your team putting one over on your rivals and at this stage of the season, along with fourth spot being up for grabs, this could be a very significant game for both Arsenal and Tottenham.

"The one thing I’m slightly worried about is our midfield because Thomas Partey is away at AFCON, and Granit Xhaka has Covid, so I doubt he’ll be available."

Arteta – Tavares sub 'not pleasant'

Mikel Arteta made the decision to substitute Nuno Tavares after just 34 minutes in the FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The left-back reacted angrily to being hauled off, throwing his gloves in frustration and storming off the pitch.

And speaking on the incident, Arteta said: "That these things happen in football. I’m there to make the right decisions.

"It’s not pleasant but at the same time we are here to help our players and we have to do it in many different ways.

"Hopefully that’s a way. In my side it gives me even more encouragement to help them because I've been there. It’s part of a process."

    Arsenal still a big attraction

Mikel Arteta remains confident that Arsenal can still attract the best players in world football, despite failing to qualify for European football this season.

The likes of Dusan Vlahovic and Georginio Wijnaldum remain linked with the Gunners.

And Arteta said: "Historically this club has always been targeting the best players in the world and they were always interested to come here.

"I can say that hasn’t changed. Every time I've spoken to a player they were so willing to come.

"That’s a big advantage for us."

    Nketiah to stay at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has confirmed Eddie Nketiah will stay at Arsenal for the rest of the season.

Crystal Palace and Brighton had been linked with a £10m move for the 22-year-old, who is out-of-contract in the summer.

But the Gunners are set to reject any advances for the forward this month, despite being likely to lose him for free at the end of the season.

Arteta said: “The situation is that Eddie is our player, he’s under contract so he is going to stay here with us.”

    Arteta tight-lipped on Vlahovic

Mikel Arteta has been questioned on rumours linking Arsenal to Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic.

The 21-year-old Serbian forward is a reported target for the Gunners, with Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang's future uncertain, and both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah out of contract at the end of the season.

Arteta though remained coy on Vlahovic links when quizzed in his press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool.

He said: "I’m really sorry to disappoint you but you know I’m not going to be discussing any transfer rumours."

Petit – signings needed this window

Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has told the Gunners that signings need to be made this month, especially in midfield, with Thomas Partey currently at the Africa Cup of Nations.

In an interview with, Petit said: "Arsenal have to go into this transfer window, but they can't be patient as the market is closed in three weeks’ time and there is so much speculation surrounding players coming to the club.

"But, Arsenal need to get some new faces because of players missing due to the African Cup Of Nations, Covid and injuries.

"They are especially short in midfield actually.

"Then you think about the players in the midfield area who have been out on loan recently, they need to get some of them back.

"Matteo Guendouzi is one of those and he’s performing really well with Marseille recently."

Bent – Gunners should sign Bissouma

Former Premier League striker Darren Bent has urged Arsenal to sign Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent said: "I would like to see Arsenal go and get Yves Bissouma from Brighton. I really like him, I think he's a top, top player. I think he's gettable as well.

"Him and Partey in the middle of the park, that is what you call protection in front of the back four by the way.

"You let the likes of [Emile] Smith Rowe, [Martin] Odegaard bomb forward.

"If you can Yves Bissouma, I think he can turn into a top player in this league, I really do. Yeah I really like him.

"He's one of those players that can be box-to-box but if you ask him to sit there, he's comfortable in possession. Yeah he's a top player."

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "I've been told Arsenal are one of his favourite clubs.

"Somebody quite close to me said that when he was growing up that he was an Arsenal supporter.

"So I think that he would be more than happy to play for Arsenal one day.

"I'm not going to say it's going to happen this month. I'm not going to say it's going to happen in the summer.

"But they are definitely, I've been told, a club that are close to his heart."

Arsenal are planning for the future as they bring in teenager Lino Da Cruz Sousa from West Brom

And the left-back – who is part-Brazilian – has already represented England at youth level.

West Brom coach Peter Gilbert previously said of the teen: "Lino’s an athletic full-back, reads the game well, has a lovely left foot.

    Good morning Arsenal fans

Piers Morgan says Arsenal should give their unattached former midfielder Jack Wilshire a contract to ease their midfield woes.

The Gunners have been left short in central midfield due to Africa Cup of Nations call-ups for Ghana’s Thomas Partey and Egypt’s Mohamed Elneny.

Sun columnist and big Arsenal fan Morgan tweeted: “Would love to see Jack Wilshire back in an Arsenal shirt.

“Spoke to him recently and he’s fit, training well and desperate to get playing again.”

Another star who might fill that midfield void for Arsenal is Palmeiras star Danilo.

Danilo, 20, has impressed in a defensive midfield role for the Brazilian side and helped them to the Copa Libertadores title last year.

But he reportedly has a number of suitors including Lille and Monaco, as well as Arsenal.

The Gunners are also one of several clubs interested in Eintracht Frankfurt’s Filip Kostic, according to Calciomercato.

The Serbia wideman, 29, has caught the eye with some impressive performances in the Bundesliga.

And apparently one-time Premier League Special One – now Roma boss – Jose Mourinho has made Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka his No 1 summer transfer target.

The Swiss star, 29, was heavily linked with a move to the Serie A giants last summer and is said to be at the top of Mourinho’s wish list.
