Golf tips and free bets: Three picks for the 3M Open and one for the Cazoo Open in Wales

THE 3M Open takes place this week in Minnesota following the Open Championship last week.

Our man David Facey picked up three places from his six selections and has three picks for this week here.

Despite a host of players taking the week off, or heading for Tokyo for the Olympics, there is a reasonable field for this event.

Dustin Johnson tees up and is the betting favourite ahead of Louis Oosthuizzen and Tony Finau. Robert MacIntyre has also made the trip after a decent week at Royal St George’s

Tips for 3M Open

Hot shot: Tony Finau, 16-1

Yes, Finau frequently flatters to deceive and doesn’t win – but you can’t lose them all!

He is going to add to his lone victory at the 2016 Puerto Rico Open eventually. And another three runner-up finishes this year, plus a share of third in this event last year, suggest he will not get many better chances than this.

Accuracy is vital in the ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’, around Minnesota. It often seems as if half of them are on this course.

A PGA Tour high 316 balls disappeared in the drink last year, 1189 of them on the dreaded par three 17th. It plays tougher than the one at Sawgrass.

Finau had missed his last two cuts heading to the Open, but definitely found something at Royal St George’s.

He was third in the greens in regulations stats, and should improve considerably on his 15th place last week.

Mid Price: Emiliano Grillo, 33-1

Another player who turned things around at the Open – the Argentine had missed three successive cuts before finishing just outside the top ten last week.

And going back to the need for accuracy, he is currently fifth in the PGA Tour’s greens in regulation standings, so avoiding those lakes should come easier to him than to most of his rivals.

He proved that by finishing third in this event last year, and looked certain to go one better after finishing runner-up in The Hertighate earlier this year.

Hard to believe Grillo has gone six years without a win on the PGA Tour – although he has posted four second places. Remind you of anyone Tony?

Long shot: Adam Long, 125-1

He might have been questioning his decision to fly over for the Open after rounds of 72-77 saw him miss the cut by eight shots, but at least it shows a thirst to get better.

Long climbed into the top 100 of the world rankings when he finished runner-up in this event last year, and will need another good performance to stay there.

But that will be no problem if he can reproduce the dazzling form he showed over the weekend a year ago. Closing rounds of 63-64 made him the hottest player in the field.

That also suggested he had unlocked the secret to playing well at TPC Twin Cities, and at three figure odds he looks a tempting proposition to go one better.

And one for the Cazoo Open – Justin Harding, 16-1

The South African put his name on the leaderboard at St George’s heading into the final round, and even though he slipped down into a share of 19th a closing 72 was hardly disastrous.

He has been threatening to follow up his Kenya Open win at the start of the year for a while, and will know a bit more about Celtic Manor after making the cut in the Celtic Classic and the Wales Open last year.

This week’s line-up lacks star quality – apart from co-sponsor Gareth Bale! – and a reproduction of Harding’s fifth place in the BMW International four weeks ago would probably be good enough here.
