Tom Brady & Cam Newton Currently Lead NFL Jersey Sales
New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton trails only one person in NFL jersey sales right now. None other than the man he succeeded in Foxborough.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Patriots legend and new Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady sits atop NFL jersey sales right now.
Newton is currently second, followed by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Baltimore Ravens quarterback and reigning league MVP Lamar Jackson and San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa.
As you can see, quarterbacks are completely dominating jersey sales in the early going.
It’s no surprise that Brady – the most accomplished player in NFL history – is still first in jersey sales. Despite leaving the dynastic Patriots for one of the league’s most mediocre teams, his popularity hasn’t decreased in the slightest.
Newton was one of the league’s most popular players during his tenure with the Carolina Panthers, but his popularity should only increase now that he’s playing for one of America’s most beloved sports franchises.
The Patriots’ popularity has greatly increased over the years. That’s what happens with winning teams. And as long as they continue to win with Newton, that won’t change in the slightest. And it may not be long until the 2015 MVP moves ahead of Brady in jersey sales.
Newton had an excellent debut in the Patriots’ Week 1 win over the Miami Dolphins. He completed 15 of 19 pass attempts for 155 yards, but Newton did most of his damage in the running game – finishing with 75 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
But unlike Newton, Brady struggled mightily in his first game with his new team. The six-time Super Bowl champion and three-time MVP completed just 23 of 36 pass attempts for 239 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while taking three sacks in a 34-23 road loss to the New Orleans Saints. And three of Tampa Bay’s scoring drives were aided by a long defensive pass interference penalty on the home team.
