The Queen once joked people ‘wanted her dead’ after she was gifted a poisonous plant twice in one week – The Sun

THE QUEEN once joked that people were trying to kill her off after she was presented with the same poisonous plant twice in one week.

During her visit to the Chelsea Flower Show in 2016, the monarch was presented with a bunch of flowers containing Lily of the Valley.

And speaking to the Queen, her gardener Jekka McVicar informed her that the flower was historically used as a poison, Hello! reports.

Recalling the conversation Jekka said: “She said, 'I've been given two bunches this week. Perhaps they want me dead'."

The 93-year-old royal is well known for her sharp sense of humour with royal expert Ingrid Seward referring to her as a “comedian.”

On the Queen and Prince Philip's 70th wedding anniversary Ingrid explained to Loose Women: "I think the secret is they laugh together. I think the Queen is the [comedian].

"She's a wonderful mimic. She can do the Liverpool accent, she does Irish – she's very good at American as well."

It also previously emerged that Her Majesty once made a very cheeky joke while entertaining General de Gaulle – the former French president – and his wife.

According to Adam Helliker, author of the Royal Family, there was a spot of awkward conversation had between the monarch and her guests at Buckingham Palace.

He told Fabulous Digital: “A guest asked Madame de Gaulle what she was most looking forward to in her retirement, which was imminent.

“With great elaboration (as she didn't speak much English) she replied: ‘A penis.’

“An awkward silence ensued for some time, until the Queen herself came to the rescue, and she said with a broad grin: ‘Ah, happiness.’”

In other royal news, we told you how Mike Tindall accidentally revealed an intimate family photo of Zara and daughter Mia.

Plus we told you how Charlotte Church has admitted the Queen had no idea who she was despite them meeting seven times.

We also revealed that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry "will take a six-week break and head to the United States" before Christmas.

Spider-Man Needs To Cut Ties With This Avenger In Order To Successfully Move Forward In The MCU

As soon as Tom Holland took over as Spider-Man in the MCU, the character truly found a new life. Making a highly anticipated appearance in Captain America: Civil War, Peter Park skyrocketed to one of everyone’s favorite Avengers. That’s why it was so heartbreaking when Sony and Marvel’s negotiations were revealed and Spider-Man was back with only Sony. This meant that he couldn’t appear in any future MCU movies, therefore not allowing him to be an Avenger in Phase 4 and beyond.

Now that they’ve come to a newer deal and fixed that issue, there’s one Avenger Peter Parker has to cut ties with in order to move forward with Marvel and Sony in the future.

Spider-Man is staying in the MCU, for now

As stated above, Marvel and Sony have come to a compromise of sorts with a new deal that allows Peter Parker to stay in the MCU for at least two more movies, for now.

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” Feige said in a statement to Variety on Sept. 27.

While that’s great for Marvel fans everywhere, and allows a smooth transition into Phase 4, there was a brief period of time where that was threatened. If Spider-Man was kicked out of the MCU, there would be a gaping hole that couldn’t be fixed: his close relationship with Tony Stark.

Tony Stark is a little too intertwined in Parker’s story

Tony Stark was such a major mentor and figure in Peter Parker’s two movies. If the negotiations had died in that sort of stalemate, then you’d be left with a Spider-Man film with the exact same cast, but it would feel like a completely new arc and story, almost like a completely new universe. Peter wouldn’t be able to reference anything that happened in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home

Sure, he wouldn’t be able to mention what happened with the Avengers either, but that’s not as big of an error. Most MCU sequels don’t mention the crossover movies but will be an extension of a previous solo film. Spider-Man 3, in this case, would be a brand new iteration of the character, in a way.

Some say that Peter Parker’s relationship with Tony Stark was a flaw

As ScreenRant pointed out, Marvel was granted a little bit longer with Peter Parker, and this is their time to “fix” that connection with Tony. Unless Disney buys Spider-Man, Sony will get full rights to him again at some point. If it’s still with Tom Holland, the arc needs to lead to a place where Peter’s story can be dependent on just Peter, no one else. ScreenRant calls it a flaw for this reason.

Peter Parker probably can’t become the new leader of The Avengers, either

There have been rumors that Spider-Man will become the new leader of The Avengers. This might not be the case anymore, especially if Kevin Feige and Marvel want a contingency plan if they were to lose rights to him again. It’s very possible that Spidey could take a lead role on the team, but considering he’s a teenager and also might not be with Marvel forever, don’t count on him as the leader.

Regardless of how Marvel moves forward with Spider-Man, it would be in its best interest to write an arc for Peter that steers away from Tony Stark. Mentions of his mentor are totally fine, but having a whole movie devoted to his memory isn’t going to work well anymore. Thank goodness the MCU has a couple more movies to figure it out.

How the Premier League table would look right now without the much-maligned VAR – The Sun

VAR has been responsible for overturning 26 decisions in the Premier League this season after just 100 games.

And almost every team in the English top-flight has had a reason to slate the controversial system this term.

Jurgen Klopp slated VAR after Liverpool's record chasing run of league wins came to an end against Manchester United.

And even Chelsea fans couldn't believe their luck after the video assistant referees rescued them against Ajax.

But it's not all been negative, as Manchester City had the new technology to thank as they closed the gap on Liverpool with a controversial win.

If teams underachieve at the end of the season, no doubt they will be quick to blame VAR.

Had it not been introduced at the start of the 2018/19 campaign, Liverpool would still be on top and Manchester City would be a close second.

Chelsea, who are currently fourth, would leapfrog Leicester to sit in third.

The Foxes would fill their spot in fourth ahead of Arsenal, who would still be stuck outside of the top four.

Wolves would benefit from the absence of VAR more than any other team in the Premier League.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side would rocket from 12th to 6th in the table.

Crystal Palace, who are sixth in the standings after 10 games, have reaped the rewards of the new system this term.

If VAR had not intervened, the Eagles would be eight places lower.

Inside Doomsday horror house where depraved Dutch dad locked six kids in dungeon for nine years – The Sun

THIS is the isolated farmhouse of horrors where an alleged "doomsday cult" leader kept his six kids locked in a dungeon for nine years.

Dutch cops revealed some of the victims can no longer speak properly after their ordeal and believed there were the only people left on Earth, "waiting for the end of the world".

Gerrit Jan van Dorsten, 67, was arrested last week on suspicion of "deprivation of liberty", money laundering, and harming the health of others.

The six siblings were discovered after the eldest son escaped and raised the alarm in nearby Ruinerwold — about 60 miles north of Amsterdam.

Jan Zon van Dorsten, 25, walked into a cafe-bar where he downed five beers before telling the owner his siblings needed help.

Officers then found his four brothers and sisters, all now aged 18 to 25, and their bedridden father in the farmhouse's hidden basement.

DOOMSDAY CULT

Gerrit Jan van Dorsten is accused of forcing his kids to remain inside the house as they awaited the apocalypse in a doomsday cult.

But he appears to have stayed in touch with the outside world online, publishing rambling videos on Facebook.

In one of the clips he posted with the pseudonym "John Eagles", van Dorsten showed himself exercising outside the farmhouse.

He also discussed whether Nasa would build a farm on Mars and shared pictures of flowers growing in his garden.

Dutch media reports say van Dorsten was once a member of the Unification Church, a movement which began in South Korea and is often referred to as the "Moonies".

There he is believed to have met Josef Brunner — who was also arrested last week on suspicion of the same charges as van Dorsten.

Brunner is thought to have worked as a groundskeeper on the farm.

Cops are now looking into whether a "certain religion or philosophy" played a part in keeping the children detained at the farmhouse.

U.S., UK and Norway urge South Sudan to meet deadline for transitional government

LONDON (Reuters) – The United States, the United Kingdom and Norway urged political parties in South Sudan to meet a Nov. 12 deadline to form a transitional government.

South Sudan’s main opposition leader told a visiting United Nations Security Council delegation on Sunday that he will not be part of a unity government next month, dashing the prospects of progress in a stalled peace process.

Former rebel leader Riek Machar said the parties have failed to agree on ways to integrate the army, a key condition of a peace accord signed last year, and could not see how they could form a government without it.

“South Sudan faces a critical moment in the journey toward a peaceful and prosperous future. There are now less than four weeks for political leaders to form a transitional government,” the countries said in a joint statement.

“We urge the South Sudanese parties to meet the November 12 deadline to form a transitional government that will enable the conditions for a constructive relationship during the next phase of South Sudan’s peace process.”

Jubilee Line status – what’s wrong with the Tube this morning? – The Sun

LONDON'S Jubilee Line is experiencing a chaotic morning after faulty trains cause major delays during rush hour.

But what exactly happened and has the problem been fixed? Here's the latest.

What's wrong with the Jubilee Line this morning?

Commuters have been hit with morning rush hour chaos on the Tube after a large part of the Jubilee line was suspended due to faulty trains.

There was no service between Waterloo and Neasden, which TfL said was due to an “unavailability of trains”.

TfL warned passengers of severe delays across the entire line, and an estimated duration of the delay was not specified.

The Jubilee Line posted a series of tweets this morning.

They notified customers: "Due to the temporary unavailability of trains the Jubilee line is part suspended between Neasden and Waterloo and severe delays on the rest of the line."

The account also urged customers to make alternative travel arrangements, later tweeting: "Customers are advised to avoid using the Jubilee line due to the temporary unavailability of trains. Please use alternative routes to your destinations. We do have ticket acceptance in place."

The reduced service began running on Thursday morning and is expected to continue until this afternoon.

A statement on TfL’s website read: “No service between Neasden and Waterloo only, due to the temporary unavailability of trains.

“Tickets will be accepted onc2c services between Upminster and Fenchurch Street.

“Tickets will be also be accepted on London Buses, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail, Southeastern and Thameslink via any reasonable route.”

What other chaos has the Tube seen this week?

Yesterday, Extinction Rebellion eco-warriors caused chaos after they climbed to the roof of a Tube train in London.

The protesters took over trains at Stratford, Canning Town and Shadwell in London this morning in what the group admitted was a "huge own goal".

The eco-warriors had hoped to bring the Tube network to a standstill – with huge banners unfurled on the roof of trains reading "Business as usual = death".

Fed-up passengers appeared to have had enough of the two week chaos the climate change group have brought to central London.

The protesters have also targeted the DLR at Shadwell – with pictures showing a trio of activists having a chat on top of a train after gluing themselves to the roof.

But the elderly group were branded "muppets" by baffled commuters – because the DLR is electric-powered.

TfL confirmed there were severe delays on the Jubilee line due to a "customer incident" at Canning Town.

Tube passengers were being urged to find alternative routes – with the delays also causing minor delays between Stanmore and Finchley Road.

British Transport Police confirmed eight people had been arrested at Stratford, Canning Town, and Shadwell on suspicion of obstructing the railway.

What is Extinction Rebellion?

Extinction Rebellion describes itself as a non-violent direct action and civil disobedience group.

Its eco-warriors have demanded that the Government declares a climate emergency.

They want politicians to take urgent action on climate change and wildlife declines.

In particular, the activists want the UK to reduce its carbon emissions to "zero by 2025" and do more to "remove the excess of atmospheric greenhouse gases".

The international apolitical network is using non-violent action to persuade governments worldwide to act on climate and ecological emergency.

Here's their three demands in the UK according to their website:

  1. Tell the truth – Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change
  2. Act now – Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
  3. Beyond Politics – Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice

Yankees wound up over Astros whistling in dugout: report

Astros’ Justin Verlander accuses MLB of ‘juicing’ baseballs for more offense

Genesco Sports CEO John Tatum on Astros pitcher Justin Verlander’s allegations of the MLB ‘juicing’ baseballs.

Whistling and other noises allegedly coming from the Houston Astros dugout during the American League Championships Series against the New York Yankees are reportedly angering the boys in pinstripes.

A person familiar with the incident told the New York Post on Wednesday that Yankees coach were not happy with the whistling they heard in Game 1 of the series and they suspect that it is part of the Astros’ plan to try and steal signs from the opposing team.

A separate person with one of the Astros’ division rivals told the newspaper that the whistling is a way for the team to let everyone know they stole a sign at Minute Maid Park.

Title

“I don’t think it’s any secret they do it,” the person told the Post. “They bang pipes. We have heard they have cameras around the park and that some way of communicating originates from their bullpen. Just look at their home record.”

Houston boasts a 60-21 record at home and 47-34 on the road. The Astros lost two road playoff games against the Tampa Bay Rays and picked up a victory in Game 3 of the ALCS on Tuesday against the Yankees.

Masahiro Tanaka and catcher Gary Sanchez were seen changing up their signs during the first game of the series against the Astros. New York came away with a 7-0 victory.

“We knew about it,” Tanaka told the newspaper through an interpreter Sunday before Game 2. “They’re really good at picking things up. And on top of that, they play at a really high level.”

New York gets two more home games against Houston in the series – Thursday and Friday. The team might not have to go back to Minute Maid Park if they drop both of them.
