Mrs Phylis Dalby (played by Amy Nuttall) made her first appearance in All Creatures Great and Small last week when her husband, the late Billy Dalby, died. The Channel 5 show introduced the farmer’s wife in the form of the star of stage and screen, Amy, who has a whole list of credits to her name. Express.co.uk has compiled a profile on the star of the show and it seems viewers of the television drama will know her very well.
Who is the actress who plays All Creatures Great And Small’s Mrs Dalby?
Amy has not been featured on the show before but she certainly generated intrigue from viewers with her appearance as the widow.
At the age of 39, the actress has landed some high profile roles, some she might have never thought she would get when growing up as a child.
Born and bred in Blackburn, Lancashire the star of the small screen has a fitting link to the show as she is able to reconnect with her Northern roots.
Wanting to be on the stage, she trained at the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts and she performed with the National Theatre.
She also starred in a production of Guys and Dolls in 2006 in which she played the role of Sister Sarah Brown.
However, it was in 2000 she landed her breakout role as she secured the role of Chloe Atkinson on ITV soap, Emmerdale.
Chloe quickly became friends with Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) and found herself at the centre of a whole heap of drama.
By 2005, the actress had quit her role after five years as she wanted to pursue a singing career and she had landed a role on the UK tour of My Fair Lady, playing Eliza Dolittle on stage.
Her route back to television saw her starring in shows such as Hotel Babylon, Death in Paradise, New Tricks and Liar.
One of her other stand out roles included playing the role of Ethel Parks in 15 episodes of Downton Abbey from 2011 to 2012.
Following her stint as Winnie Peterson in ITV drama Liar, All Creatures Great and Small was her next big role.
Away from the stage and screen, Amy’s private life is kept under the radar in the press but it is known she is married.
The actress met her spouse, Andrew Buchan in 2012 and they got married following several years of being in a relationship.
They share a child, who was born just three years after they first met each other in 2015 although there are no public pictures of the child.
What happened to Mrs Dalby on All Creatures Great And Small?
Mrs Dalby’s appearance in the third episode of season two and she got to interact with the protagonist of the show James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph).
The vet had to go to the Dalby farm and meet with Amy’s character as the herd of cows she owned were sick and struggling to breathe.
Unfortunately, he had to break the news the cattle would not survive after diagnosing the cows with parasitic bronchitis.
Wanting to offer a helping hand, the vet urged the widow to sell the farm and cut her losses rather than fight a losing battle.
Helen Alderson (Rachel Shenton) was not impressed with her love interest for suggesting an idea and Mrs Dalby shut him down.
The widow reassured the vet she was determined to carry on and fight the fight, meaning it is likely she will feature in future episodes.
Actor Samuel West, who plays vet Siegfried Farnon, took to Twitter earlier this week to commend Amy’s appearance in the show as Mrs Dalby.
In response to his comments, the former soap actress posted: “Cheers Sam. Loving watching you in it. Brilliant as always.”
All Creatures Great And Small airs Thursdays at 9pm on Channel 5.
