Black Is King Co-Director Blitz Bazawule Will Helm The Color Purple Musical Film

Blitz Bazawule, the Ghanaian director who co-directed Beyoncé’s acclaimed Black Is King visual album, is set to reimagine a beloved and culturally iconic film, The Color Purple.

According to Deadline, Bazawule will be at the helm for the feature film musical adaption of the classic 1982 Alice Walker novel and Tony Award–winning play. The producers behind the upcoming adaption of the film and story include Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones.

Both Bazawule and Winfrey took to Twitter to share their elation for the film’s new, modern rendition.

“Honored to reimagine Alice Walker’s classic novel ‘The Color Purple’ for a new generation. Beyond grateful to have the legends Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders as my Producers alongside Warner Bros Studios. Get ready for something AMAZING!!” wrote Bazawule on Twitter.
