Everyday Was National Coffee Day on 'Gilmore Girls': More Than 500 Cups Were Poured Over Seven Seasons

Gilmore Girls fans are celebrating National Coffee Day with free drinks at coffee houses around the country. Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Krispy Kreme are all celebrating the holiday with special promotions. While the country is celebrating coffee on Sept. 29, every day felt like National Coffee Day in Stars Hollow. Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter, Rory Gilmore, were self-proclaimed coffee addicts, but do you know how many cups of coffee were poured for them during the show’s seven-season run? Hint, it’s probably more than you would think.

National Coffee Day enthusiasts would be proud, ‘Gilmore Girls’ established the love of coffee in the pilot

Lorelai Gilmore’s coffee addiction was established in the very first scene of the show. In the pilot, Lorelai heads into Luke’s Diner and begs Luke Danes for a cup of coffee. The surly diner owner questions how many cups of coffee Lorelai drank before entered the establishment. While she admits to having five cups already, she still wants more.

Showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino established Rory’s penchant for caffeine during the same scene. Rory meets Lorelai at the diner for breakfast and insists that she is crabby because she “needs caffeine.” Rory was 15 when the series began in 2000. Her coffee addiction grew over time.

How many cups of coffee did Lorelai and Rory drink in the show?

Lorelai and Rory seemed to keep Luke’s diner in business almost single-handedly. They ate at the Stars Hollow establishment for multiple meals, most days, and even stopped in regularly just to grab a coffee, too. Lorelai and Rory weren’t only enjoying coffee at Luke’s, though. Rory regularly visited the coffee cart at Yale, and Lorelai drank plenty of java at the Dragonfly Inn and home. Surely they would be celebrating National Coffee Day, right now, along with everyone else.

So, exactly how many cups did they drink? According to Refinery 29, the Gilmore girls drank an astonishing 503 cups of coffee during the show’s seven-season run. The ladies drank the most coffee during the show’s first season and then leveled off a bit. Their consumption dropped off in season 5, though, before picking up again in season 6, points out the publication. Season 5 was also when Rory dropped out of school and stopped talking to her mother for more than five months. While we aren’t saying there is a connection, we aren’t saying there isn’t one, either.

How long would it take to binge-watch ‘Gilmore Girls’?

National Coffee Day feels like the right time to start a binge-watch of the series. It will, however, take you a lot longer than an afternoon and a steaming latte to polish off Gilmore Girls. The show’s seven seasons contain 153 episodes. It would take just over six days to watch the entirety of the original series.

If you are interested in watching the Netflix revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, too, you’ll need to set aside an additional eight hours. The limited series, which follows Rory and Lorelai through major life changes, is broken into four, 2-hour episodes. The revival premiered on Netflix in 2016. While a second season hasn’t been announced, it hasn’t been ruled out, either.
