After first airing on ABC in 2005, the loyal fans of Grey’s Anatomy are familiar with a new character popping up each season, but this new face is set to cause a stir for Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo). The upcoming season 18 will also see the unexpected posthumous return of a sassy fan favourite.
Deadline recently reported actor Peter Gallagher would be joining the cast of Grey’s Anatomy in the highly anticipated upcoming instalment.
With his recurring role, Peter’s character Dr Alan Hamilton will undoubtedly trigger Meredith as he has a connection to her.
In the past, Alan knew Meredith’s mother Dr Ellis Grey (Kate Burton) and as he scrubs into Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital he is set to bump into Meredith.
Depending on how well he knew her mother, his appearance could reveal some deep secrets about Ellis.
Throughout the series, it was revealed Meredith and her mother had a very rocky relationship.
As an award-winning doctor, Ellis was devoted to work and often neglected her daughter which caused her to excessively drink and party at college.
However, after the highly-admired doctor was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, it was up to Meredith to care for her – whilst keeping it a secret from her colleagues.
Even before her illness, the two had little to no relationship, so when Ellis suddenly became temporarily lucid and recognised Meredith in season three, the two shared an emotional heart to heart.
Many of Ellis’ secrets became uncovered after her death and when her daughter discovered her diaries.
This went hand in hand with the appearance of Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), who joined the cast in season 10.
She was the secret daughter of Ellis and her colleague Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr), who had been given up for adoption as a baby – she began working at the hospital to find out more about her mother.
This was a shocking discovery for Meredith as she learned she had a sister and although Maggie had been given up for adoption – through reading Ellis’ journal she uncovered that she did care for her baby.

The entire diary was filled with sloppy writing and wine stains from where the doctor would’ve had a drink but in the time she was pregnant with Maggie – the entries were neater, with no stains.
This was one unexpected appearance from Ellis’ past which triggered Meredith and changed the course of her life.
With Alan also hailing from her mother’s life and in true Grey Anatomy form, his arrival could also bring big news for Meredith.
Deadline also reported season 18 would also see the posthumous return of Ellis, in the form of flashbacks.
With the two joining the cast, could their entrance be for a significant reason – especially as Ellis would usually appear when Meredith needed tough love and guidance?
Last season also saw the return of much-loved dead characters, this included her husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), her sister Lexi (Chyler Leigh) and friend George (T.R. Knight).
These flashbacks happened while she was in the hospital with Covid and her unconscious mind took her to the beach.
Fans will have to tune in to the upcoming season to discover what Alan and Ellis’ appearance will mean for Meredith.
Grey’s Anatomy season 18 will premiere on ABC in the USA on Thursday, September 30. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
