The BBC will be launching a fresh new series all about families and the interweaving lives of others. Life is a spin-off to the BAFTA-winning drama Doctor Foster, but this show is a very different beast to its predecessor. The show starts on BBC One tonight (Tuesday, September 29) at 9pm. Express.co.uk has the lowdown on the show including insight from the cast and creatives of Life.

Where is Life on BBC set?

Life is set in contemporary Manchester and focuses on the residents of a house which has been turned into several flats.

The series will follow these various neighbours, who often have little to do with each other, and their lives which will interlace but not necessarily cross over.

Speaking to media including Express.co.uk about the concept of the show, acclaimed playwright and Life’s creator Mike Bartlett revealed Life had been four years in the making.

He said at a recent Q&A: “Well, I used to live in a flat which was part of an old house which had been divided up, and I used to be amazed that we were all one stud wall away from each other but we didn’t really know each other.

“We would hear the most intimate details of each other’s sex lives and love lives and all sorts of things and you’d meet in the corridor and you wouldn’t exchange two words.

“I found that really interesting about our nature as people about how when we want to be private and when we want community. That we are desperate for a connection and yet so often we end up feeling alone, particularly in big cities. So, I wanted to write about that.”

Bartlett said he’d written some heavy pieces and was looking to pen something towards the lighter side of the spectrum which is how Life came about.

While he said Life would “go to some very dark places” like Doctor Foster, there was also an uplifting side celebrating the strength and resilience of humanity.

He said the show also had humour and redemption as well as hope, particularly during the pandemic.

Life has an all-star cast including Adrian Lester, Alison Steadman, Melissa Johns, Calvin Demba and Rachael Stirling.

The show will deal with all manner of problems people face in life and how they overcome them.

From marriages on the brink, burgeoning parenthood, life after a divorce and more, there will be a kaleidoscope of stories for audiences to get stuck into.

Where is Life on BBC filmed?

The show takes place predominantly in Manchester with the action in various locations across the city.

Life was shot over four months in 2019 before the coronavirus pandemic.

Bartlett said of the choice of setting: “I love Manchester. I went to university in Leeds and I loved that too. I love writing shows that are not in London at the moment.

“I think there’s something about London – London is its own world with its own rules and I do love London.

“But you get out of that and you find different worlds. I think Manchester totally has that.”

He continued: “Spending a lot of time there over the last couple of years, I did think at one point, ‘Anything can happen in Manchester in a way you don’t necessarily feel in other places.’

“There’s a genuine sense of life – but I didn’t mean that pun.

“There’s a sense that things can turn and it’s full of all different sorts of people and that’s absolutely what the show’s about. It looked beautiful on camera as well.”

Bartlett also said Life could be watched independently of Doctor Foster with the two shows being connected vaguely through Victoria Hamilton’s character of Belle.
