Forensic expert Ella Lopez (played by Aimee Garcia) finally decided to confront her bad habits and ditch the ‘bad boys’ in the latest season of Lucifer.
While Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) was battling with his evil twin, Michael, Ella faced her own demons when she started dating a seemingly perfect new boyfriend.
However, season five delivered a crushing bombshell when ‘adorkable’ journalist Pete Daily (Alexander Koch) was revealed to be a murderous sociopath known as the Whisper Killer.
Ella made the chilling discovery herself when she uncovered Pete’s disturbing secret room of lilies, the killer’s calling card, hidden in his house.
Rather than fleeing the scene, the plucky CSI confronted Pete, hoping for information on the whereabouts of missing detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German).
Normally taking a backseat to the action, Ella and Pete’s tense interaction in the midseason finale was the first time she had come face-to-face with a cold-blooded killer with no sign of backup.
During a conversation with Den of Geek, Ella star Aimee Garcia revealed the surprising circumstances that led to shooting Ella and Pete’s uncomfortable confrontation.
She explained: “What’s funny about that particular scene is that we shot it three weeks before it was planned.”
“Something had come up, and they were going to shut down production for a couple of days, and I said, ‘Do we have to?
“‘Is it possible if we could see if Alex is down to do the scene three weeks before it was planned? I’m down.’”
Rather than leaving Pete’s final moments on the series until later, Garcia and co-star Alexander Koch powered ahead and managed to deliver one of the many unforgettable moments of Lucifer season five.
Their commitment certainly paid off, as the sequence in Pete Daily’s creepy home was the perfect end to Ella’s midseason arc.

Garcia has also touched on Ella’s overwhelming guilt and self-hatred heading into season five part two, so her horrific, short lived relationship with Pete is sure to lead to some defining character moments when Lucifer returns.
Despite the challenge, Aimee Garcia welcomed the chance to plunge into unchartered territory with Koch and take on their most difficult scene three weeks early.
She continued: “The type A in me wants to have the most time to prep.
“But then the impulsive, instinctive, actor/artist in me is thinking: ‘this doesn’t give you time to think, this doesn’t give you time to plan anything, and this doesn’t give you any time to get in your own way.’”
“You just have to go raw and instinctual. It was probably one of the most challenging scenes [I’ve done], because I’m not used to doing that, especially with light-hearted Ella.”
The nerdy and optimistic CSI usually provides Lucifer some much needed heart and soul, but her sunny demeanour may have taken an irreversible hit after learning the truth about her ex-boyfriend.
Fans will have to keep their eyes peeled for the second half of season five to discover the extent of Ella’s trauma.
