Peaky Blinders movie will happen after sixth and final season
Peaky Blinders may be coming to an end after six series, but fans will get one final send-off in the form of a movie.
The hit BBC series, starring Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, has resumed filming on its sixth season, with show creator Steven Knight confirming it will be the last we’ll see of Peaky Blinders on TV.
However, fans won’t be completely rid of the Shelby family, as Knight has now revealed that the story of Tommy, Arthur and co will come to a close in a Peaky Blinders movie – like he had always planned.
Speaking to Deadline, Knight addressed the disruptions to filming season six due to the coronavirus pandemic and his plans to wrap up the story of the Shelby family on the big screen.
‘Covid changed out plans, but I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie. That is what is going to happen,’ Knight teased.
The movie is set to follow on from the final season of the TV series, with Knight shedding light on what fans can expect when Peaky Blinders returns.
‘Peaky is back and with a bang. After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher,’ he explained.
‘We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.’
Peaky Blinders was forced to shut down filming on season six last year, due to Covid-19 wreaking havoc with the TV and film industry.
The setback not only caused delays to production, but led to plot changes in order to ensure filming could still work with the cast’s schedules. Although, Knight previously said that any ‘developments and changes’ have, in fact, worked for the better.
It was teased in December that filming was set to be given the green light again, with a hair and make-up artist on set seemingly revealing that production was back on, after teasing a tell-tale haircut for leading star Cillian.
A release date for season six is yet to be confirmed, but Finn Cole, who stars as Michael Gray on the series, seemed to suggest that Peaky Blinders could be back on our screens by the end of the year.
‘I’m hoping that we can go back to work next year and that we can have things ready for you by the end of the year,’ Cole told NME.
‘I can’t wait to get back to work and for the fans to see it because they’ve been waiting so patiently for so long now; it’s about time we gave them something.’
