Pirates of the Caribbean has changed a lot over the past five films. The first film in the franchise, The Curse of the Black Pearl, broke box office expectations in 2003. The film grossed an incredible $650 million on just $140 million budget, marking the film as an unexpected success. This huge triumph was mainly down to Johnny Depp’s incredible performance as Captain Jack Sparrow. The esoteric and almost vacant performance was based on Keith Richards and Pepe Le Pew, cementing the character in cinematic history.

Unfortunately, Depp’s recent high court trial against a British publication has pushed his private life out into the open.

During this court case, information regarding an “abusive” relationship between Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard was detailed.

After Depp ultimately lost the court case against the publication and Heard, he was dropped by Warner Bros. from his role as Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

Rumours have been rife over the course of 2020 regarding Depp’s position in the upcoming slew of Pirates of the Caribbean spin-offs.

The latest rumours to hit the internet suggest the star is actually being replaced by a Marvel actor – Ryan Reynolds.

According to an industry insider, Reynolds is apparently being eyed by Disney to become a brand new fast-talking swashbuckling pirate of legend.

His quippy nature would certainly suit the franchise, but the fate of Jack Sparrow still remains a mystery.

Other rumours have suggested Karen Gillan will be taking over as the main protagonist of the franchise – could this be in tandem with Reynolds, or in a spin-off movie?

Unfortunately, fans will have to wait and see what occurs with the return of the franchise in due time.

The last film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales / Salazar’s Revenge, was released in 2017, and made $794 million at the box office – markedly less than the $1 billion made in the film prior.

Two more POTC films have been confirmed by the House of Mouse – but their release dates and titles have not yet been officially announced.

Recently Jude Law spoke out about Depp’s firing from Fantastic Beasts.

Law plays Albus Dumbledore opposite Depp, and the third film in the franchise was due to continue pitting these characters against one another.

The Holiday star confessed: “It’s an enormous film, and there are many, many layers to it.

“It’s probably one of the biggest productions I’ve ever worked on. And in a situation like this, you defer to the studio. That’s all you can do. Because you have to turn up and play your part.”

Law then called the decision to fire his colleague “unusual”.

Law said: “It was unusual for me because, in fact, on this particular role, Johnny had actually only done a day’s filming, I think, on his own.

“In a franchise like this, it’s the studio and the company that make the big decisions. And you have to go along with those, because we’re just a member of the team.”

No information has been given on who will replace Depp as Grindelwald going forward.

The Pirates of the Caribbean films are available to watch on Disney Plus now.
