Robert Pattison Is Officially the New ‘Batman’
The Bat Signal is calling for Robert Pattinson.
After initial reports that the “Twilight” star was the frontrunner for Matt Reeves’ upcoming “The Batman” movie, multiple news outlets have confirmed that Warner Bros. has approved the casting and Pattinson is moving forward as the Caped Crusader.Deadline, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter report that Pattinson won out over “X-Men” star Nicholas Hoult and is closing his deal with Warner Bros.
“The Batman” is slated for release June 25, 2021.
Pattinson, of course, became an international star in the “Twilight” saga movies. Since then, he’s focused on small, edgy indies, working with auteurs like David Cronenberg, James Gray and Claire Denis.
The actor takes over the Batman cowl from Ben Affleck, who played the character in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League.”
In 2016, Affleck was attached to direct and star in a standalone Batman movie, but stepped away from both roles. Reeves (“Planet of the Apes”) took over in 2017.
Not much is known about the movie. Reeves has previously revealed that he’s planning to feature “a rogue’s gallery” of villains in the movie. Recently, THR revealed that those villains may include the Penguin and Catwoman.
The director also has teased that the movie will show Batman’s sleuthing skills, not just his superhero qualities.
“It’s very much a point-of-view-driven, noir Batman tale,” he said. “It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films.”
