EastEnders could be in for an Alfie Moon-shaped treat as Shane Richie has hinted his character could make an explosive return that could spell the end for Kat and Phil.

The actor who played beloved soap character Alfie, appeared on Lorraine on Thursday, where he dropped the bombshell that Walford could be welcoming him back soon.

Recently, Alfie's ex Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) has begun a fling with sworn enemy Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), but Shane said that his character's complicated past with both of them could put an end to the romance.

Shane, who starred in last year's I'm A Celebrity, said: "Funnily enough I was speaking to Jessie because I still see her all the time.

"Alfie's still on the run in Spain I think running a bar in the Costa del Sol and I think he still owes money to Phil.

"I know that Kat and Phil Mitchell are bumping uglies at the moment, they're getting together. So who knows, there could be a chance that Alfie could turn up and spoil their little party.

"But you didn't hear that from me."

Alfie and Kat had left Albert Square together in 2016 for a new life in Spain, but Kat returned in 2018 after Alfie discovered she'd had an affair and they split.

Fans saw Alfie make a brief return as it emerged he had got Kat's second cousin Hayley pregnant and he moved back to London to run a funeral business.

But when the business's finances started to struggle, he convinced Phil to lend him £30,000 and then ran off back to Spain, leaving the money with Kat who used it to pay for Jean Slater's cancer treatment.

Phil started threatening Kat and her children over the return of the money, which she did manage to pay back eventually – but it makes their fling even stranger given that they were bitter enemies.

Kat was recently run over by Whitney Dean, who was convinced that the Mitchells were responsible for boyfriend Kush Kazemi's (Davood Ghadami) death, although viewers know he was actually killed by Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith).

Gray pushed Kush in front of a tube train and also murdered his wife Chantelle (Jessica Plummer) in a shocking abuse storyline that has been nominated for a Bafta for must-see TV moment.
