‘Skint’ I’m A Celeb star Shane Richie had to borrow money from pals in lockdown

Actor and EastEnders legend Shane Richie says I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! 2020 will help keep him in the black after Covid-19 wreaked havoc on his personal finances.

The star, who played Alfie Moon in the hit BBC soap, says he had planned for a bumper 2020 inclining a TV series, a tour and a Christmas panto role, but the pandemic left his plans in tatters and him strapped for cash.

Shane, 56, said: "We got the call in January and I agreed to do it because it was the 20th one.

"My kids were old enough to travel to Australia and they wanted to meet Ant and Dec! We were all really excited.

"We were going to fit it around my other work projects as I was going on tour, doing a TV series and panto but that all got cancelled in March.

"And now I am literally skint! You save money for a rainy day but you don’t expect the rainy day to last six months."

He candidly continued: "Thankfully I’ve been able to borrow money from mates, my family and the bank and my wife is now very happy we can finally pay off the credit card."

Joking he is looking forward to time away from his family, the soap legend added: "But what an honour to be asked before lockdown.

"I am so grateful and I am really looking forward to being around adults again instead of my wife and three children!”

Asked how he would feel if the show led to other TV opportunities and Shane said: "I do feel like I have come home.

"Everyone thinks of me as a BBC person but I am ITV.

"I was Mr Saturday night.

"Yeah I would love to do more entertainment shows again.

"If they said ‘let’s give Shanie a show,’ wouldn’t that be lovely?"

This year I'm A Celeb will take place at Gwrych Castle in Wales.

Over the past few months construction crew have worked hard to revamp the derelict building.

While the sleeping area will be covered from the elements, a large uncovered space has been selected as the centre of camp to allow for fires for cooking.

Shane will be joined on the show by Team GB Olympic legend Mo Farah, Corrie's Beverley Callard, Radio 1 DJ Jordan North, EastEnders actress Jessica Plummer, Strictly's AJ Pritchard, presenter Vernon Kay, author Giovanna Fletcher, West End star Ruthie Henshall and BBC journalist Victoria Derbyshire.

Paralympian Hollie Arnold and tenor Russell Watson complete the initial 2020 line-up.
