The Great British Bake Off's Maggie reveals heart-wrenching family tragedy in emotional tribute post

THE Great British Bake Off's Maggie has revealed a heart-wrenching family tragedy in an emotional tribute post.

The baker became a firm favourite among Bake Off viewers thanks to her traditional approach in the tent.

However, the 70-year-old was voted off after forgetting to put flour in her sticky toffee puddings.

Since leaving the show, Maggie has regularly posted her bakes on social media, and to mark Remembrance Sunday, she shared a snap of some cupcakes decorated with red poppies and the GB flag.

She wrote alongside it on Instagram: "Today we remember those lost in conflict.

"I am remembering my grandfather who died in France on the 1st July 1916. He died unaware he had a son on the way who was my father."

Her followers were touched by her sad story, with one replying: "What a poignant story Maggie. The cakes look great as usual."

Another wrote: "A nice tribute. So sad. My grandfather was there as well. He returned home, fortunately, but with health issues. Remember all our vets."

A fellow follower shared: "How lovely what a great way to remember !!"

Despite her exit being almost inevitable last month, Bake Off viewers were devastated to see Maggie go – and flocked to Twitter to share their reaction.

One wrote: "Oh my heart! I absolutely love Maggie! Gutted for her!"

Another added: "Poor Maggie – she was so lovely but everything just kept going wrong. I feel so bad for her."

The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4 and is available on All4.
