Nick and June first met in season one when she was placed at the Waterford’s residence as a Handmaid.

Nick was also employed by the family as a driver but as a man, he had more rights, so he could come and go as often as he liked.

The two became friends, which eventually progressed to a secret and illegal affair, as the Handmaids weren’t permitted to be in relationships if they were caught, they would be punished to death.

Despite the risk, they stayed together and Nick was able to use his privilege and social standing to help June plan her escapes.

After numerous failed attempts, June eventually became a free woman when she made it to Canada in season four.

Throughout the instalment, Nick had been promoted to Commander in Gilead and continued to help June from afar.

The two eventually shared an emotional reunion, when he agreed to bring files containing information about the whereabouts of June’s daughter Hannah Bankole (Jordana Blake).

In the season finale, June and Nick shared a romantic moment which left fans wondering why he couldn’t just leave Gilead too.

Viewers took to Reddit to discuss this and Melicaffa responded: “According to interviews, Nick doesn’t leave Gilead because he believes that he deserves to be there, because he was a part of it at the beginning.

“Also, I think that now he does see himself in a position to help. I always thought (and still do) that he works as a double agent, probably because of it, there was no deal with the Swiss,” they added.

This could be a possibility because in season one Nick understood the downfalls of being a Handmaid and sympathised when the Waterford’s first one hung herself.

His work as a double agent could be a way for him to be useful in order to bring justice and implicate those who founded the state.

Fans witnessed it when he joined forces with Canadian representative Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger) and agreed to have Fred Waterford transferred back to Gilead for a trial instead of immunity in Geneva.

Also by Nick providing information regarding Hannah, season five could see him help with her escape.

Many fans are convinced Nick will use his authority as Commander to bypass the need for permission and checks to finally reunite the child with June.

Another user steamyglory, wrote: “We saw him put a wedding ring on, and I think Nick has a conscience that worries what will happen to his wife and Martha and driver if he leaves.

“They’d probably all be hung on the wall for it, if he’s even successful,” the viewer concluded.

When June and Nick first reunited, fans noticed he was wearing a wedding ring, indicating he had moved on and got married since June’ departure from Gilead.

With a potential family, they could be left to face punishment if he was to successfully escape.

It could be a possibility, where his wife doesn’t see any wrongdoing with the state’s way of running things, so she could also be against the idea of escaping.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 is expected to air in 2022.
