'The Witcher' Season 2: Will 'Nightmare of the Wolf' Voice Actor Theo James Reprise the Role of Vesemir?

The streaming giant Netflix is set to release some exciting new installments in The Witcher universe this year, including the animated prequel The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and season two of the live-action Witcher series. While fans became familiar with the monster-hunting warrior Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) in the first season of The Witcher, the animated prequel Nightmare of the Wolf will follow the origin story of Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir.

Because the series and the prequel each occur in different timelines, Cavill likely will not appear in the prequel movie, since it will be set many years before Geralt and Vesemir ever cross paths.

‘Nightmare of the Wolf’ follows the origin story of Vesemir

Along with the trailer for the upcoming animated film, IMDb describes Nightmare of the Wolf as a story that will follow Vesemir, who has fled a life of poverty by becoming a witcher, seemingly in it for the coin he earns and the glory he receives from his peers. However, when a strange new threat arises, Vesemir will be forced to “face the demons of his past.”

The anime prequel will likely offer some intriguing backstory for Vesemir’s character, as fans get to see how he became a witcher in the first place. It will take place entirely before the events of the series, according to The Verge.

Actor Theo James will be bringing the voice of Vesemir to life in Nightmare of the Wolf. Fans of James’ previous work will recognize him from his most notable role in the Divergent movie franchise and his voice acting in the animated series Castlevania.

Will Theo James cross over into ‘The Witcher’ season 2 as Vesemir?

The Witcher series takes place in a much different timeline than we will see in Nightmare of the Wolf. Although witchers age much more slowly and live much longer than humans do in The Witcher universe, the time difference would still leave Vesemir as a much older-appearing character than we will see in his origin story.

Remember that Geralt is just a young child when he first begins to train under Vesemir’s mentorship, so the age difference between the two is significant (while Cavill and James are nearly the same age.)

Prior to his voice work for Nightmare of the Wolf, James had a very brief role in the season one finale of The Witcher, where he voiced the character Vesemir in Geralt’s flashback. IMDb credits James as the voice actor for Young Vesemir in ‘Much More,’ the final episode of season one, although some have speculated whether he might appear briefly in the second season as well.

While fans would probably love an appearance from James, it seems more likely that an older Vesemir will make an appearance to match the current timeline — actor Kim Bodnia has been credited for the role of Vesemir in at least one episode of the upcoming second season.

When you can expect the upcoming ‘Witcher’ releases

Fans can enjoy the animated prequel Nightmare of the Wolf that premiered on Netflix on August 23. The much-anticipated second season of The Witcher will return later this year on December 17. In addition to these two releases, Netflix also has a live-action, six-episode prequel miniseries in the works.

The Witcher: Blood Origin will take place about 1,200 years before the main series’ timeline. The miniseries will follow an event known as the “Conjunction of the Spheres” where the worlds of humans, elves, and monsters all collided, sparking the need for the creation of the witchers.

This limited prequel series is still pre-production, and there is still no word of a release date, although fans are hopeful for a premiere sometime in 2022.
