Viewers tuned in to watch the first episode of the BBC drama on Sunday night and they were instantly left on the edge of their seats. Vigil follows Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (played by Suranne Jones) as she investigates a suspicious death on board a nuclear submarine. However, fans were left unimpressed when they discovered the death Amy was investigating was Craig Burke, played by Line of Duty actor Martin Compston.

As soon as the show began it had viewers gripped as they watched a trawler boat being sunk and dragged into the sea by forces unknown.

Martin’s character Craig, who witnessed the mystery incident happen from the submarine, brought it to the attention of his boss.

However, he ended up having an argument with the captain, Newsome (Paterson Joseph) and was sent to his bunker.

Craig ended up being replaced by another engineer after he pleaded with Newsome to try and save the people on the trawler.

Shortly after the argument, Craig was found dead by one of his friends in his bunk.

As they administered CPR, Prentice (Adam James) asked: “Christ, what happened?”

As the doctor attempted to save him, they realised it was too late.

It was later revealed that Craig had died from a suspected overdose.

Despite the dramatic beginning, many viewers were left frustrated over the fact producers killed off the Line of Duty star’s character within minutes.

Some fans even referred to Martin by his Line of Duty character’s name, Steve Arnott.

One raged: “There must be flashbacks, you can’t kill Scottish Steve Arnott off in the first 10 minutes.

There had better be flashbacks!”

Another penned: “Killed off in under 10 minutes you have to be kidding me.”

A third asked: “Erm, what happened to @martin_compston I was NOT expecting that. #Vigil” (sic)

“Can’t believe they killed Steve off in the first five minutes,” another disappointed fan said.

A fifth tweeted: “I am watching #Vigil purely for Martin Compston and he dies within the first eight minutes, I haven’t been this upset since this Line of Duty finale.” (sic)

“If @martin_compston is only in this #vigil for five minutes I will fume!!!” a sixth viewer wrote.

Other viewers claimed the only reason they wanted to watch Vigil was because Martin starred in it.

The episode continued with DCI Amy Silva going on board the submarine to investigate Craig’s death.

However, it didn’t take the detective long to come to the conclusion that Craig may have been murdered.

She soon started to ruffle a few feathers when she began her questioning.

Although, it was clear to see that someone was trying to cover up the death up, but who?

Vigil continues on Monday at 9pm on BBC One.
