With Halloween just on the horizon, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Netflix subscribers are taking inspiration from some of the iconic looks in Squid Game. The South Korean series dropped on the streaming service last month and has proved to be an international success. After millions have binge-watched the entirety of the show, many are now dissecting every second and finding out as much as possible about the creation of Squid Game.

What was the original title of Squid Game on Netflix?

Squid Game has become Netflix’s biggest series launch with more than 111 million viewers streaming the show in the first month.

The drama is now worth almost $1billion (£654million) as a result of its popularity continuing to grow.

Squid Game has stood out among the thousands of shows on the streamer for its detailed and thrilling plot, memorable costumes and gripping characters.

Another reason why it stands out is because of the show’s name itself – but it wasn’t always going to be Squid Game.

Netflix Asia executive Kim Min-young has opened up on how they had another idea for the show title in mind.

The executives didn’t originally think audiences would understand that Squid Game was actually a reference to a Korean children’s game, therefore, alienating a big chunk of their viewers.

“We went with the title Round Six instead, wanting it to be more general and helpful for telling people what the show is about – there are six rounds to the game.”, Min-young told The Hollywood Reporter.

But director and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had faith that Squid Game was the best way forward.

Min-young continued: “I think the more authentic title has actually played really well.

“The title, Squid Game, together with the eye-catching artwork, really capture interest within our service – especially for audiences who have never watched a Korean show before but are looking for fun things to watch.

“I think we tend to underestimate the curiosity that a lot of our members and audience have.

“In trying to make it really easy to understand what the show is, we could have made a big mistake.”

As of yet, there has been no official announcement that Squid Game will be back for a second season.

However, given its global popularity, it seems unlikely the streaming service is going to want to let go of the show anytime soon.

Dong-hyuk has admitted there have been “talks” in relation to a second series as well.

But even if there are more episodes to come, fans may be waiting a while.

As Dong-hyuk had fans excited one minute, he also disappointed them the next.

He told The Guardian that even if there is a second outing of Squid Game, he may not work on it straight away as there is another project he wishes to pursue.

Dong-hyuk said: “Of course there is talk. That’s inevitable because it’s been such a success.

“I am considering it. I have a very high-level picture in my mind, but I’m not going to work on it straight away.

“There’s a film I really want to make. I’m thinking about which to do first. I’m going to talk to Netflix.”

Squid Game is available to watch on Netflix.
