When did Lucy Beale die in EastEnders and how did Bobby kill her?

EastEnders is about to bring one of its most notorious characters back as Bobby Beale returns to Albert Square.

The character will be seen again for the first time on Thursday night, as actor Clay Milner Russell takes over the role and in doing so, becomes the fifth actor to play Bobby.

Of course last time we saw him was before he was jailed for unlawfully killing his sister Lucy Beale – as part of the notorious 30th birthday storyline which had the entire viewing nation gripped – having finally confessed to the crime.

So just when did Lucy die – and how was she killed by Bobby?

Let’s take a look back at that story…

When did Lucy Beale die in EastEnders?

Lucy Beale was found dead on Walford Common in the episode of EastEnders which aired on 18 April 2014.

The character’s death remained a mystery for the next 10 months, spawning one of the biggest whodunnits the soap has ever had – with Bobby revealed as Lucy’s killer as part of the special week of live episodes to mark the soap’s 30th anniversary in February 2015.

The complicated plot saw Max Branning (Jake Wood) – whom Lucy had been having an affair with – initially convicted of the murder and given a 20-year jail sentence – with Ian and Jane (Laurie Brett) going to desperate lengths to cover up Bobby’s crime once the truth came out.

This initially involved sending him to boarding school to keep him away from Walford – but when Ian was unable to continue sending him Bobby lashed out at Jane with a hockey stick, leaving her with injuries which confined her to a wheelchair.

He subsequently confessed in the Queen Vic both to attacking Jane and to killing Lucy – receiving a three year sentence for unlawfully killing his sister.

How did Bobby Beale kill Lucy?

Bobby killed Lucy by hitting her over the head with her jewellery box – with Jane finding her body on the floor of the living-room where the crime was committed.

At the time, however, he did not realise he had killed her – standing in the living-room holding the jewellery box as he told Jane: ‘Whatever she says, she started it. She made everyone unhappy.’

She covered up his crime by leaving her body on Walford Common, sparking the murder investigation.

Catch Bobby Beale’s return to EastEnders on Thursday night on BBC One from 7.30pm.
