The fourth season of Yellowstone is hoped to air on Paramount this summer and answer fans’ burning questions from last year’s finale. With John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) and his family fearing for their lives, one theory may have finally singled out the prime suspects.
A new fan theory has suggested three of the Yellowstone Ranch’s fiercest rivals were behind the attacks in the show’s third season finale last year.
Episode ten, ‘The World Is Purple’, concluded with ranch owner John Dutton bleeding out on the roadside, his mobile phone the only thing stopping a fatal shot to the heart.
Meanwhile, his son Kayce (Luke Grimes) defends himself from approaching gunmen, while an explosive package was delivered to the office of Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly).
Most fans previously thought the three assassination attempts can be pinned on a single person, someone who may have been trying to get their hands on the Duttons’ property since the start of the first season.
However, recent speculation from one fan on Reddit suggests the Duttons fell victim to three distinct attacks that just so happened to commence at the same time.
It would certainly be a huge coincidence, but this viewer was adamant the powerful landowners have accumulated more than enough rivals over the years to make the theory possible.
Redditor dogsanddundermifflin kicked off the thread, naming Roarke Morris (Josh Holloway), Willa Hayes (Karen Pittman) and Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) as the three candidates.
They explained: “[Roarke] found out that John had his two guys killed. He’s out for blood, before John can get his.”
In the penultimate episode, ‘Meaner Than Evil’, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) hanged Wade Morrow (Boots Southerland), who had been hired by Roarke to cause unrest on John’s ranch.
When word got back his bothersome lackeys had been taken out, Roarke may have decided to bypass John’s loyal ranch hand and go straight for the head of the snake.
Meanwhile, Market Equities CEO Willa Hayes is bound to have it in for Beth after the ruthless banker brought the company to the brink of ruin.
The fan continued: “Yes, a little extreme but Beth is attempting to ruin her career – people have killed for less.”

“She also mentions it feels like an oil deal in Yemen, and said that’s how it needs to be treated, which seemed ominous.
“Something bad happened in Yemen. And they want to repeat it in Yellowstone.”
The fact that Beth may have been taken out by an explosion as opposed to her father and brother also seems to suggest a different and potentially more cunning combatant was behind this scheme.
Finally, Jamie immediately put himself under suspicion when he sought out his real father, Garrett Randall (Will Patton), after learning he had secretly been adopted.
In their first conversation in decades, Jamie confessed he wanted to get his hands on John’s land for himself, prompting Garrett’s advice to ‘kill the king’.
The Redditor added: “For Kayce, I think Jaime hired someone… but not to kill him. To hurt him or scare him off.”
Rather than going straight after John, Jamie decided to remove his brother from the picture, as Kayce remains the person he has always felt closest to in the dysfunctional Dutton family.
The final moments of Yellowstone season three saw Kayce flip over his desk to defend himself, so it’s likely he’ll survive the ordeal.
However, even if he doesn’t know his brother was potentially behind the attack, Kayce may heed the attacker’s warning and disappear before the war for the Yellowstone gets out of hand.
Yellowstone will return with season 4 in 2021 on Paramount.
