17 killed and 8 injured after SUV smashes into 22-seater bus and starts fire

Seventeen people killed and at least 8 injured after a SUV burst into flames when it hit a 22-seater bus.

The head-on collision happened in South Africa's northwestern province of Limpopo.

A spokesman from the Department of Transport and Community safety for region reported that the driver of the Toyota SUV lost control of the vehicle when a tyre burst, leading to the horror head-on crash with a Mercedes Benz bus.

A statement from traffic police on Facebook read: "The bus burst into flames and eleven occupants trapped inside were burnt to death. The driver of the SUV was also killed on impact. Eight people survived, six are seriously injured and two escaped with minor injuries."

"Transport and Community Safety MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has sent messages of condolences to the affected families and wish speedy recovery to the survivors."
