‘Beautiful, sunny’: Melbourne basks in balmy Easter weather
Melbourne is enjoying its hottest Easter in decades prompting warnings to be safe in the sun and for campers to take care in warm, windy conditions.
Melbourne is expected to reach 32 degrees on Saturday – signalling the hottest start to April since 2014 – while Horsham in the state’s west tops out at 34 degrees.
Melbourne recorded its hottest Good Friday in more than 80 years yesterday, with parts of the city hitting 30.6 degrees in the early afternoon.
The last time similar temperatures were reached on Good Friday was March 26 in 1937.
But the hot weather won’t last, with a cool change coming into Victoria overnight. The milder conditions are unlikely to melt your Easter eggs, with Melbourne forecast to reach a top of 23 degrees on Easter Sunday.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Zuzanna Palej said most of Victoria was going to enjoy a “beautiful, sunny day”, which wasn’t necessarily unusual for mid-Autumn.
“Temperatures today are quite warm, but not that unusual for an Easter period, because we are in the early stages of April and still transitioning that cooler weather,” she said.
“We’re definitely above average, but it’s not the warmest Easter that we’ve had, because Victoria recorded 34.9 degrees in 1940.
“If you are heading to the beach, it is going to be quite a lovely and sunny day, but the water might still be cold as it probably hasn’t had enough time to warm up yet.
“Enjoy the day but please remember to drink plenty of water and slip, slop, slap.”
The Country Fire Authority said the Wimmera and south-west regions of Victoria had a “very high” fire danger rating on Saturday, owing to strong north-westerly winds.
Warnambool is forecast to reach 34 degrees, with wind gusts of more than 50km/h recorded at 11am on Saturday.
VicEmergency urged campers to be vigilant with extinguishing fires over the long weekend.
“If you’re lighting a campfire, always ensure that the fire is completely extinguished before you leave,” it said on Twitter.
