Charles’ ‘birthday nightmare’ with Harry and William that was ‘masked by smiles’

Prince Charles will today mark his 72nd birthday with wife Camilla in Berlin.

They will attend the National Day of Mourning which will be a more poignant affair than the grand celebrations of his 70th birthday.

The Prince of Wales was two years ago pictured smiling from ear to ear as he marked his special milestone with a family photoshoot.

Sons Prince William and Prince Harry, his wife Camilla, and daughter-in-laws Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton were all pictured together while Louis, George and Charlotte were snapped playing with their grandfather.

It appeared as though the Royal Family were relaxed and happy, but royal biographers Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claimed the shoot was extremely difficult to get through.

Quoting an unnamed source in book Finding Freedom, Scobie and Durand claimed Charles’ 70th birthday was in fact a "nightmare" – but you wouldn't have known from the pictures.

They alleged Prince William and Prince Harry made very little effort to nail down a date for the photoshoot.

The authors claimed the royal brothers can often be "hot and cold with their father," and the shoot ended up being an "absolute nightmare."

In the book, Scobie and Durand write: "The boys can be hot and cold with their father, disclosed a source, who gave the example of planning the photo session for Charles' 70th birthday, which they called an absolute nightmare.

  • The Queen and Prince Philip still don't understand why Harry left, claims royal expert

"Neither William nor Harry made much of an effort to make themselves available."

Scobie and Durance claimed William and Harry's "complex" relationship with their father is made worse due to the fact Charles is technically Harry and William’s boss.

They wrote: "The brothers sometimes had to vie for additional funds for projects from their father, who also helped to cover expenses related to Camilla and some of those for his sons (including Kate and Meghan's wardrobes).

"They actually genuinely have to debate who gets what amount from their father to fund their projects.

"While Charles may be a father to Harry, he's also their boss, and that makes their relationship complex for a number of reasons."
