Jealous thug took his girlfriend to toilet with him in case men checked her out

A jealous thug took his girlfriend to the toilet with him because he could not stand to leave her alone in case she was approached by another man.

Robert Harper also cut his partner from all her friends.

And he did not even trust her family – accusing her of having affairs with her cousin and brother.

Harper, 31, took control of every aspect of the woman’s life. He operated her mobile phone and had her benefits paid into his bank account.

And when overcome with jealousy he beat her with a baseball bat.

The woman only escaped his clutches when he was remanded in custody after stabbing her at a lockdown-breaking party.

Harper, of Clowne, Derbyshire, was jailed for three years at Derby Crown Court after admitting controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.

Recorder Martin Butterworth said the victim had been “subjected to fear of violence” throughout their seven-year relationship.

Rebecca Coleman, prosecuting, told the court the woman “said the defendant would not allow her to be in the same room as someone of the opposite gender and would have to go to the toilet with him”.

She added: “He repeatedly accused her of cheating, even saying she had slept with her own brother and cousin.”

Miss Coleman continued: “He prevented her from seeing her own children, her family, her friends and her benefits entitlement was paid into his bank account.

“She said she even stopped taking pride in her own appearance to stop him becoming jealous.

“In a victim impact statement she says he feels like she is a shell of a person compared to how she used to be.

“She hopes to rebuild the relationships she has lost with her family and friends.”
